ANN BANCROFT DIES AGED 73

Ann Bancroft, best known for her role as Mrs Robinson in The Graduate, has died at the age of 73.

The actress won the 1962 best actress Oscar as the teacher of a young Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker.

But she achieved greater fame as the seducer of her daughter's boyfriend in the 1967 movie The Graduate.

Benjamin: Oh my god.
Mrs. Robinson: Pardon?
Benjamin: Oh no, Mrs. Robinson. Oh no.
Mrs. Robinson: What's wrong?
Benjamin: Mrs. Robinson, you didn't... I mean, you didn't expect...
Mrs. Robinson: What?
Benjamin: I mean, you didn't really think I'd do something like *that*.
Mrs. Robinson: Like what?
Benjamin: What do you think?
Mrs. Robinson: Well, I don't know.
Benjamin: For god's sake, Mrs. Robinson. Here we are. You got me into your house. You give me a drink. You... put on music. Now you start opening up your personal life to me and tell me your husband won't be home for hours.
Mrs. Robinson: So?
Benjamin: Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me.
Mrs. Robinson: [laughs]
Benjamin: Aren't you?

That's exactly what I was thinking. I've read several versions of the obit on different news sites and none of them mention Mel Brooks. They were married for what...40 years? Who writes these things?

She created so many memorable characters. A terrific actress... and from everything I've ever read or heard about her, a terrific human being as well.

I thought she was going to live longer than Brooks. Nobody had her in the dead pool I'm a part of.

Well, R.I.P, Anne.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

And how come "84 Charing Cross Road" isn't in widescreen?

yeah, my condolences to Mel.
i'm sure its going to be rough for him.

she's actually been on my mind a lot lately. the last week i've had scenes of her from Prisoner Of Second Avenue running thru my head ("Where you gonna get the water ?") and w/ the Borders sale i was thinking of picking up the Turning Point, but they were out of it.
next thing i know, she'd dead.
very weird.

"The Miracle Worker" was one of the first movies I ever saw in a theater and it made a huge impression on me. I watched it again last night and, 43 years later, Anne Bancroft's performance is still one of the most thrilling and moving I've ever seen in any movie, ever. R.I.P. Miss Annie.

And, frankly, I thought "young" Benjamin threw a terrific deal away when he fell for Elaine. Mrs. Robinson's evening trysts with Benjamin were ideal! Who would want more?

At any rate, R.I.P, Ms. Bancroft. You are missed.
