I may have seen Life Stinks and not remember it. I've seen bits of Robin Hood on TV. Not really interested in anything else.

Truly deserving of the "great" accolade as a director, if for nothing more than the masterpiece that is Young Frankenstein, a far better film than anything ever directed by Godard, Dreyer, Mizoguchi, Bunuel, Fassbinder, Tarkovsky, Murnau, Renoir, Truffaut, Roeg, Antonioni, Visconti, von Trier, Cocteau, Sirk or Kazan.

WOW!! I've known some people that didn't think it was as funny as most people, but an F??? Did you have a bad experience watching this as a child?

Nice one George, that's what I want to see. Bill and Brook will shudder when they read that, a Mel Brooks film better than the films of their favorite Sight & Sound-luvvies, never!

No, just my honest opinion, which I was motivated to forcefully state by seeing one of the greatest movies of all time denigrated as an F.

First of all, I 'd like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Mel Brooks for the recent loss of his very talented wife, Anne Bancroft.

In many ways, Mel Brooks reminds me of John Carpenter in that both film-makers, after an impressive initial outburst of creativity, saw their careers peter out really fast and, although they kept working irregularly (Carpenter, admittedly, less so), their subsequent work suffers immeasurably in comparison with the classics they made their reputations on.

You seem to like SPACEBALLS an awful lot! Actually, I've considered picking up that recent SE DVD but, in all honesty, I have my doubts as to how tolerable it would be nowadays; of course, as a kid I enjoyed it but, even though my critical faculties where less sharp then, one could already sense a distinct falling-off in quality...

I tend to agree with you about Brook's later works, however, you might want to check out Life Stinks. While not the classic that Young Frankenstein, etc. is, I think it's a highlight of his later career, and quite enjoyable (as long as you're not expecting Blazing Saddles, etc.)

I'd certainly be interested in checking LIFE STINKS (1991) out...but only if you retract the following statement of yours (since you've picked on 5 of my favorites):

Seriously, though: while I'm as confused as anyone else here about Brook giving an F grade to YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974):frowning:...although hopelessly misguided, one can't say that you haven't the courage of your convictions!
