George A. Romero is the 4th director in this series that I've seen/met in person.

I know I've seen Creepshow and I'm pretty sure I've seen Monkey Shines (or at least rented it in high school and not watched it ;) ) but I don't remember either.

Anyone who enjoys Romero's zombie epics should check out Shaun of the Dead, an affectionate British spoof on the undead genre, it's hysterically funny.;)

I know we're going to get some directors like Zemeckis where someone's going to disparage him and say he's done nothing great, and some of those same people think mindless zombie movies are great. Hey, that's your opinion, fine, but it makes me feel very, very secure in my opinion about directors I think are great such as Zemeckis, etc. :)

Heh, I know what you mean. I rarely make it to the theater anymore for one reason or another. Only seen two flicks in the theater so far this year (Sin City and Revenge of the Sith). I'll definitely see LOTD if it comes around, even though it'll probably be R-Rated. :frowning:

George, I've been checking out your "likes" in the horror department, and I have to ask you a serious question: "Why do you even bother watching horror movies?" :)

Because some are great!

For example:

Rosemary's Baby
Psycho
Frankenstein
The Bride of Frankenstein
Jaws
Jurassic Park
The Silence of the Lambs
Time After Time
Misery
Blow Out
Duel
Wait Until Dark
Dressed to Kill
The Birds
Blade
Alien
Aliens
Frenzy
Predator
The Sixth Sense
Deliverance
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters 2
The Burbs
The Ghost & Mr. Chicken
Young Frankenstein

The fact that there are many, many horrible horror films (with gore, slashing, and more gore substituting for good story telling), doesn't mean there aren't many worth watching.

Well, George, I'd question some of your ideas of "horror" films (DELIVERANCE? THE BURBS? BLOW OUT?) but thanks for the reply.

As for the slasher genre, while I prefer a story and more "suggestive" material as a general rule myself, when I'm in the mood to let my hair down and enjoy those exploitation gore films for what they are, I do enjoy them!

I guess any suspense film can be called horror. :)

As for Romero, I can't wait to see LAND OF THE DEAD and from what I read, it appears the director hasn't sold out. I think that's the key to Romero, he doesn't sell out and he doesn't deliver mindless films. He's had some low points but he continued to do things his way and for the most part, horror fans have been happy. How anyone could call NIGHT or DAWN "mindless" leaves me rather mindless.

The Dark Half (1993) :star::star::star:
Two Evil Eyes (1990) :star::star:1/2
Monkey Shines (1988) :star::star::star:
Day of the Dead (1985) :star:1/2
Creepshow (1982) :star::star:1/2
Dawn of the Dead (1978) :star::star::star::star:
Martin (1977) :star::star::star:
There's Always Vanilla (1971) :star:
Night of the Living Dead (1968) :star::star::star::star:

For the record, I think the version of VANILLA I saw was cut so I probably shouldn't count it. I can't even remember if I finished the thing. I think MONKEY SHINES is his most underrated film. The best for me would be DAWN followed by NIGHT. Both of them are among the greatest horror films ever made IMO.

OK, so I threw in a few pseudo-horror flicks for comic relief :)

But my point remains, that one can love great horror films like Psycho, Rosemary's Baby and Jaws without having to like films like Night of the Living Dead, Flesh for Frankenstein and Don't Look Now. It's true that I'm never going to be a horror afficianado, but I still love the best of that genre (at least as I see the best).

I'd certainly agree with you regarding these two.

In the horror fields though, both NIGHT and DAWN are considered what KANE would be to its genre or 2001 to its genre. George, it seems you like horror/comedies so you should track down RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD if you want to see a good mixture of laughs and zombies. It would make a good double feature with your Halloween viewing of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN.
