I was a huge fan of DePalma's at one time, Carlito's Way was the last great DePalma film. Mission Impossible was surprisingly lackluster coming from this director, but it was saved by some brilliant setpieces, and was miles better than John Woo's hysterically flashy sequel.

And I'm probably the only person here that's watched Mission to Mars more than once, or at all. I know it's usually grouped in with Battlefield Earth and Red Planet but for some strange reason I liked it, even Morricone's odd music score seemed to fit somehow, and he's the last composer you'd think of to score a sci-fi movie. I see Jim didn't think much of it.

Honestly I don't remember much about it except that I know I didn't care much for it at the time.

Make no apologies for what you like though. I have my fair share of films that seem to get roasted on a continuous basis (Lost World, Island of Dr Moreau, etc, etc,). Call 'em guilty pleasures or what have you.

I would much rather give Mission to Mars another spin than sit through an 80 min film with two French twits sitting around drinking tea contemplating the meaning of their existence.

Strange how even the most derided films have their supporters, I'm sure there are Battlefield Earth fans out there, I can't point and laugh because there are some really crappy films I'm fond of too, none of them directed by Jack Hill btw (I kid I kid).

Brian de Palma is the 3rd director in this series that I've seen/met in person.

Help! I've entered a parallel universe, Bill likes the same De Palma films I do, we have roughly the same ratings, and he's the only other person I've seen that liked Mission to Mars and even admits to owning the dvd.Nooooo

While I've never met a director I did literally bump into an actor once, Joss Ackland who played a villain in Lethal Weapon 2. I walked straight into him while strolling in Soho, Central London years ago, nearly knocking him over, I apologised, all he said was "yes alright" as he grumpily walked off, I felt like a real twat.

Is he still living? Haven't seen him in anything recently.

Steve, I have the Morricone score too. I'm scared to watch the film again, but on its own, this score is fabulous. "Where?" is one of the single most towering, bombastic and glorious cues I've ever heard.

Well I'm a bit of a fan Kirk, so is De Palma by the looks of it, Morricone also composed the music for The Untouchables and Casualties of War.

I own the soundtrack also, as well as dozens of other Morricone scores...I'm a huge fan of his music!

Oh, hardly ...I'm just too reserved and shy to go up to a complete stranger (even movie directors) and start a conversation.

I had De Palma all to myself for about 20 minutes and never approached him.
We were at the world premiere of the restored version of Welles's Touch of Evil and he sat in the row in front of me, about 5 seats away. I recognized him instantly and he was wearing the same damn khaki jacket that he always seems to wear. I contemplated for 20 minutes whether I should say something to him, but I totally wimped out. :frowning:

When the movie was finished and the 1,000+ crowd made their way to the exits, I found myself squashed up between De Palma and JANET LEIGH!!!!

There I was, the middle of a Hitchcock sandwich! :b

Apparently they are good friends and proceeded to have a little chit-chat while yours truly was stuck between them and trying to act all casual.

Just a little film geek moment of mine.

Joss ackland is still alive and acting...you might have seen him recently in K-19: The Widowmaker

Wow! Something you'll never forget eh? I crash into old Joss Ackland and you're crashing up against the iconic Marion Crane, just isn't fair.

I've got K-19, I forgot he was in that.

BTW - Dionysus in '69 and Murder à la Mod are available on a French R2 DVD...which I'm trying to find on the cheap.

My only two chances to meet a director I wimped out too. I shook hands with Francois Girard but couldn't think of anything to ask him and Don McKellar was by himself after a Q&A he did for Last Night but I couldn't get up the courage to go talk to him.
