I am a huge fan of Blow Out and Body Double. They made me a huge fan of DePalma and I would go to a movie just because he directred it. If any one director could get as close to Hitch as he could while maintaining his own style it is DePalma. He needs to go back to making movies like he used to and get away from all the status quo. I guess you have to pay the bills though.

Whoa! [salutes] Welcome to the Brian DePalma fan club no.6! Body Double and Blow Out eh, good films, both very Hitchcockianesque (great word what). I remember DePalma being asked once in a magazine who his three favorite directors were, his answer: Hitchcock, Hitchcock and... Hitchcock (maybe he was stuttering). Posted Image

As was the case with Woody Allen, I don't know how many times I've held the DVD cases of De Palma's films in my hands while roaming the local rental store but I'll eventually get to watch BODY DOUBLE (1984), CASUALTIES OF WAR (1989), THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES (1990) and MISSION TO MARS (2000) someday...

P.S. Hey Joe...no love for PHANTOM OF THE PARADISEPosted Image? What gives?

I've tried it a couple of times now, and I think it's overrated by fans. I realize I'm in the minority, but I feel the songs are weak, and the potential for having the Phantom being a real scary presence other than a clown is kind of wasted. Paul Williams is ideally cast, I think.

I think THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW did a better job, especially musically.

Thanks for the explanation, Joe.

I've watched the film 3 times myself and I have to say that it gets better with every viewing...although, for fairness' sake, the first 2 times were dubbed in ItalianPosted Image.

Anyway, while I agree with you that THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975; ***1/2) succeed much better as a musical spoof of the horror genre, I think that PHANTOM was attempting something else and was more of a satire of the pop music industry. Actually, I think that all 3 leads fare well, although the film's scene-stealing act is Gerrit Graham's ultracampy turn as Beef.

As for the songs, while certainly not as iconic or show-stopping as those in ROCKY HORROR, I think they're quite good.

I honestly don't get why MtM is trashed so much, but whatever. The score may hardly fit, but I love listening to it on its own.
