Based on the little I've seen, he's alongside Kurosawa & Ozu as my favorite Japanese filmmaker - the skill and sustained vision of the 50s films is amazing. I eagerly await DVD releases...

Judging by the miserably small amount of films I've watched from this director, it may sound incredible to some that Mizoguchi is not only one of my 12 favorite directors, but that I also consider him the greatest of all Japanese film-makers.

For a time, I did consider purchasing the now-OOP R1 Image disc of THE 47 RONIN (1941-2) and I'd have already picked up LADY OF MUSASHINO (1951) and THE LIFE OF OHARU (1952) on R2 DVD - not to mention those enticing French Box Sets - if it wasn't for the fact that Criterion is rumored to be working on some of his films...
