Wow! I'm surprised George. I know that you're a Wilder fan, and I've read multiple place to my complete agreement that the Coens continue the lineage of great film comedy started by Lubitch through Sturges and Wilder to The Coens.

Personally, "The Big Lebowski" is easily the funniest movies of the last 20 years, and maybe 30. I can't think of anything that makes me laugh even close to that much until you get back to Mel Brook's 1974 with "Blazing Saddles" & "Young Frankenstein"

I've never read that. The Lubitsch - Wilder link is obvious. I love Sturges, but don't think he's particularly influenced by Lubitsch, nor influencing on Wilder.

Of the Coen films I've seen, they've all been damned clever, and that, they have in common with the other three. But, of the Coen films I've seen, they haven't been funny, and on that dimension, have had more in common with Wes Anderson and Kevin Smith than Wilder, Lubitsch or Sturges.

However, having said that,
Personally, "The Big Lebowski"
I haven't seen all of the Coen films, including that one, so maybe I'll yet add one of their films to my collection.

I would say they are closest to Sturges, in that both love to use "25 cent words" in their writing and play with language as being funny in and of itself, particularly by using little used funny-sounding words and phrases in place of more common terms. They also both like to play with casting, reusing many of the same actors but casting them in very different kinds of roles.

While in some ways you are right about Intolerable Cruelty Bill, I think it is worth seeing just for the Wheezy Joe scene alone. That had me doubled over in the theater. I missed the next 4-5 lines I was laughing so much.

Goofed on my "own" number. Got carried away, I only own 8. I'd heard Raising Arizona was subpar when it came out so I didn't buy it, always holding out for a better version that doesn't seem like Fox is interested in putting out.

I tend to agree with everything you've said here. I think the context of the quote that I originally mentioned was alluding more to the impact that each had on comedy during their generation(s). Their careers nearly connect (end-to-end). An argument could easily be made that each of the names listed were the primary forces of off-beat comedy during their careers.
  • Lubitsch (1915-1948)
  • Sturges (1940-1955) (Peak Years 1940-1944)
  • Wilder (1942-1981)
  • Coens (1984-???)
