Bolded films I've seen.

Whale reportedly directed much of Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels...

YOU DON'T LIKE THE INVISIBLE MAN, George??!?
It was an OK film to watch once, but in terms of ever wanting to see it again? No.

I adore Whale's monster movies (Bride is my favorite movie ever), and really want to start tracking down the others.
I don't care for modern films. All crashing cars and close-ups of people's feet.

I read that somewhere but wasn't sure if it had any merit.

Whales did direct most (if not all) of the sound version of HELL'S ANGELS so I'm going to include it here. Like many others, I agree he created some of the greatest horror films ever but sadly I haven't been able to catch any of his other films.

HELL'S ANGELS Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
FRANKENSTEIN Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
OLD DARK HOUSE Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
INVISIBLE MAN Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

BRIDE is the greatest horror film ever IMO, even though I consider FRANKENSTEIN more of a "horror film". To me, BRIDE mixes just about every genre and I'd call it more of a fantasy. However, BRIDE is also #3 on my all time list.

Like many of you here, it saddens me that, discounting HELL'S ANGELS (1930), I've watched practically none of Whale's non-horror output; the worst part is that, for various reasons, I had to abort my viewings of SHOWBOAT (1936) and THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (1939) in the single, solitary time they aired on Italian TV eons agoPosted Image!

Still, I adore his 4 horror masterpieces, enough for Whale to earn a place into my "Inner Sanctum" of the 12 Greatest Film DirectorsPosted Image. In order of merit:

1.BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) ****
2.THE OLD DARK HOUSE (1932) ****
3.THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933) ****
4.FRANKENSTEIN (1931) ****
5.HELL'S ANGELS (1930) ****
6.REMEMBER LAST NIGHT? (1935) ***1/2
7.GREEN HELL (1940) ***
8.WIVES UNDER SUSPICION (1938) **1/2
9.SINNERS IN PARADISE (1938) **1/2

I should also note that both THE OLD DARK HOUSE and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN tie for the post of my all-time favorite film(s).

Besides, although I already own the single disc edition of THE INVISIBLE MAN, I should be receiving "The Invisible Man Legacy Collection" (and the "Creature From The Black Lagoon" one, too) in the coming days. I'm still uncertain whether I should also spring for the Frankenstein and Dracula ones since I already own all the films in one way or another but, perhaps, I'll just acquire them and unload the earlier discs onto my pal at the DVD rental store...
