Jim,

You've seen all of his films that I love, but the ones you haven't seen that are most highly thought of in general, would be The Children's Hour, Detective Story, The Heiress and The Letter.

It's a valid opinion Steve, the dialogue is clunky, there are some hysterically bad situations (oily bodies near the end) and the story is pretentiously OVERBLOWN with an IMPORTENT tone. That said I enjoy the film an awful lot, and consider it great entertainment, but I can understand why someone would be put off by the negatives in the film and not be entertainted.

William Wyler:

Ben-Hur (1959) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image - Great entertainment, some overblown qualities, but the whole is much greater than the decidedly lesser parts in my opinion.
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image - American neo-realism in a bottle, an absolutely wonderful and astonishing film.
The Little Foxes (1941) - Posted ImagePosted Image1/2 - My, My. Bette Davis is an evil wench, isn't she!
Wuthering Heights(1939) - Posted ImagePosted Image1/2 - Yet another overblown film, but even great photography can't save my interest in this overwrought melodrama. Olivier is okay, but he doesn't blow me away here--overrated performance in my opinion.
Jezebel (1938) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image - Not as big as Gone with the Wind but the rotten-female-plantation-owner who-is-to-be-redeemed is the same story, and Bette Davis actually won a bit of my sympathy, which Leigh never managed. Not as good a film though.
Dead End (1937) - seen about 60% and its good stuff, but I'm not crazy to watch the last of it.
Dodsworth (1936) - Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image1/2 - male melodrama of the worst (see Stella Dallas) sort, but for a bunch of reasons, mainly performance and story resolution, this flick worked wonderfull for me.

And still another director I need to see a lot more of

*1. Ben-Hur - A
2. The Best Years Of Our Lives - A
(some of the best social realist cinema around)
*3. The Big Country - A (thematically similar to Liberty Valance but with an epic scope)
4. Wuthering Heights - C

Own: 2

Where to start? I suppose Dodsworth, Mrs. Miniver, and The Desperate Hours.

Well, I've seen two, both good (although I haven't seen Ben-Hur in years). Wuthering Heights is one of the last 3 AFI top 100 movies that I haven't seen, so I'm definitely going to try to check that out. Unfortunately I saw the '70 version and, well, that has put a damper on my enthusiasm to see the '39 version. The scores and rankings you guys are giving it is not helping.

Those cheesy overblown Bibical 'epics' of the 50s and 60s just don't work for me at all!
Bad dialogue, horrible acting, horrendously self-important pacing and tone and from my atheist standpoint, ridiculous propaganda taken to near pornographic levels.

I even know some heavily religious folks who can't even watch these films without bursting into laughter.

There are religious themed films which I love, films which feature a strong filmmaking technique which far overpower the film's message...but the '59 Ben-Hur sure isn't one of them.

I much prefer the silent 1925 version to this.

Wyler is one of Hollywood's consummate and versatile craftsmen but his predilection for literary adaptations (in my eyes) robs him somewhat of an "auteur" status; most of his films were technically impeccable and highly entertaining but, on the whole, come off as rather impersonal and heavy-handed.

There are only a few notable films of Wyler's left for me to watch: COUNSELLOR-AT-LAW (1933) and THE GOOD FAIRY (1935) - which, thankfully, are available on DVD from Kino - and THE LIBERATION OF L.B. JONES (1970); besides I have THE MEMPHIS BELLE: A STORY OF A FLYING FORTRESS (1944) on VHS.

Having said that, I'm not overly familiar with several of the ones I've watched.
