Well I'll no doubt get a lot of flak, but here goes.

Scorsese is without a doubt a talented director, who successfully is able to put his vision on the screen. In that sense, most, if not all, of his films are successes.

However, the vision that Scorsese successfully puts on the screen, is almost always one that I have no interest in, that doesn't connect with me, in some cases bores me, and in others engenders actual dislike. So for me, he is one of my least favorite directors, making only one film I actually like, though it's a truly great one. It's a shame he doesn't make more films like that one.

Rent Casino George. I'm pretty sure that might make for one more Scorsese film you might like. Though you never know. :D

MARTIN SCORSESE

The Aviator (2004) - :star::star::star::star: - really like this film, with three really incredibly stellar performances (Dicaprio, Blanchett, Alda), I hate people who ask, 'but is it a scorsese film,' as though the film is only valid if it conforms with his previous work. I think this is brilliant work.
Gangs of New York (2002) - :star::star::star::star: - this film knocked me on my ass when I saw it opening weekend, but I really really really wanted to like it, I need to see it again, but wish I could watch it on film again.
My Voyage to Italy (1999) seen a significant chunk, it was good, not as enlightening as "personal journey with martin scorsese through american movies" but very good
Casino (1995) seen chunks
Goodfellas (1990) - :star::star::star::star: - really need to see this again, I've only seen MARVHS about five years ago...
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) - :star::star::star::star: - brilliant insight into the humanity of christ. The temptation of family is so poigant and perfect.
The Color of Money (1986) seen ages ago when I was very very small
After Hours (1985) - :star::star::star::star: - hysterically funny comedy that is absolutely great with a crowd
Raging Bull (1980) - :star::star::star::star: - you can't tear your eyes away, a career masterpiece
The Last Waltz (1978) - :star::star:1/2 - drags a bit but the music rocks
New York, New York (1977) seen 60% of it, liked the beginning seduction but was bored by the lack of anything that followed.
Taxi Driver (1976) - :star::star::star::star: - stunning flick that's incredible to watch, love that crane shot over Travis' path of destruction
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) - :star::star::star:1/2 - about as good as a melodrama romance can be
Mean Streets (1973) - :star::star::star:1/2 - damn good film that has such a sprawling rambling cast and story that I didn't begin to figure out who was who and what was what until the second viewing.

Ranking:
  1. Raging Bull
  2. Taxi Driver
  3. The Last Temptation of Christ
  4. Goodfellas
  5. After Hours
  6. The Aviator
  7. Mean Streets
  8. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
  9. the Last Waltz

Obviously, I think he's certainly one of the greatest directors ever. I own all of his DVDs except for BRINGING OUT THE DEAD. The films I haven't seen yet are in my collection just waiting for their viewing.

I'm not sure how many of these "connect" with me. I've never been in the Mafia so I guess that counts out my favorite Scorsese films. I've never been a boxer either. I think the great thing about Scorsese is he shows us lifestyles that we'll never be a part of and he gives us the detail that reminds us that we wouldn't want to be a part of that lifestyle.

I seem to recall having discussed this with you already in the past but that's exactly the problem I have with Scorsese's films, Mike. Technically brilliant as they most certainly are, I can't feel much affection for them because, in most cases, they deal with despicable characters who, if I were to meet them on the street, I'd most probably cross over to the other side to avoid. This somewhat explains why the only Scorsese film I own on DVD so far is (ironicaly) one of his most disappointing - and, in my opinion, redundant - CAPE FEAR (1991)...and that's only because it was paired with the superior 1962 original!

Don't get me wrong - no one in the film world nowadays does more to shine the spotlight ever so brightly on the cinematic (both American and foreign) gems of the past but, having said that, for someone who so evidently idolizes the Golden Age of Hollywood, his own films are, in most cases, humorless and even depressing. Still, I regret not having had the chance to meet the great man himself in person last September while in Venice; he was supposed to be one of the Godfathers (together with Joe Dante and Quentin Tarantino) of the retrospective on Italian "B" movies but had to pull out at the last minute:frowning:! It was claimed (off the record, of course) that he didn't want to run the risk of running into Harvey Weinstein, who was in Venice on account of FINDING NEVERLAND (2004):)!

Scorsese may be my favorite American filmmaker, still. Crit consensus is that he has declined, and the Oscar-chasing of late is - to me - a head-scratcher (given the Academy's tratment of Kurosawa, Fellini, Hitchcock, Chaplin, Satyajit Ray and any number of other greats, I'd say the snubs Scorsese has gotten from them put him in stellar company).

His work since '90 continues to develop themes introduced in the '70s in complex and sophisticated ways; his 'departures' (like 'Kundun,' 'Age Of Innocence,' 'The Aviator,' 'Last Temptation') foreground some latent aspects of other films in thoughtful ways, while also showing off some cinematic influences. I think 'Casino' in many ways is his pivotal film - when it first appeared, I thought it was a sprawling mess, but it's seemed stronger with every viewing, and - in it's Biblically-structured narrative (the story/parable of Sodom & Gomorrah is loosely the template), it explicitly connects his 'faith' films ('Last Temptation' and the severely underrated 'Kundun')with his 'crime' films, underlining the philosophical and moral interconnectedness of both.

Even his weakest films have far deeper thought in them than your typical Hollywood offerings.
