STANLEY KUBRICK

Argh! I knew this was coming and have been dreading trying to choose between these fantastic films. I've liked every Kubrick movie I've seen except one. I even enjoyed Lolita although I was only able to see half of it due to some delamination on the DVD that I didn't notice until the movie stopped playing. So I enjoyed half of Lolita. I'll leave it off my list until I see the whole thing.

2001 has got to be my number one. It's the first Kubrick film I ever saw (my Dad being an SF buff, showed it to me early in life) and it's the one I've seen the most. The others are great too, and I generally rank whichever one I've seen most recently highest.

Today's ranking:

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
The Shining (1980)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
The Killing (1956)
Paths of Glory (1957)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Barry Lyndon (1975)
Spartacus (1960)

Easy to rate but hard to rank

*1. 2001 A Space Odyssey - A (seen on 70mm)
*2. Dr. Strangelove - A (once in theater)
*3. A Clockwork Orange - A
*4. Barry Lyndon - A
*5. The Shining - A
(once in a theater)
*6. Eyes Wide Shut - A (twice in theater)
*7. Paths Of Glory - A
*8. Lolita - A
*9. Full Metal Jacket - A
*10. The Killing - A
*11. Spartacus - A-
*12. Killer's Kiss - B+
13. Day of the Fight - B-
14. Flying Padre - C

I would say that 4-9 are virtual ties that I could order completely differently on any given day.

Full Metal Jacket (1987) - :star::star::star: - really need to watch again...
The Shining (1980) - :star::star:1/2 - enjoyed it a lot but doesn't work so well in a semi-bright room on a computer on a summer day.
A Clockwork Orange (1971) - :star::star::star:1/2 - really really need to watch again
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - :star::star::star::star: - 35mm film finally convinced me.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) - :star::star::star::star: - filmmaking perfection, I just don't have enough room in my top ten or fifteen!
Spartacus (1960) - :star::star::star::star: - seems underrated here, but I loved the heck out of the first kubrick I saw.
Paths of Glory (1957) - :star::star::star::star: - This blew my mind when I was fourteen and it hasn't lost any of its power since then.

Ranking:
  1. Dr. Strangelove, Or:...
  2. Paths of Glory
  3. Spartacus
  4. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  5. A Clockwork Orange
  6. Full Metal Jacket
  7. The Shining

In the last 6 months a theater here has shown A Clockwork Orange and The Shining and both dates happened to be weekends I was out of town.

I have seen Dr. Strangelove once in a theater and 2001 in glorious 70mm.

FYI, Fear and Desire is the most primitive of this filmmaker's features. I saw it twice at a school screening in 1975. For fans of Mr. Kubrick, it fascinates; one can see the emergence of his style. Further emerged in Killer's Kiss, but still crude. But by his third feature film, The Killing, he was already a major, major talent.
