JOHN FORD

Wow, he made a lot of movies. I've seen what may be considered his top three. There are several others that I plan to check out but haven't got around to yet. I encountered these on my quest to watch the AFI's top 100 list. Liberty Valance is by far my favourite, but I consider all three of these to be top tier films. Ranked in order:

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

The Grapes of Wrath (1940)

Stagecoach (1939)

The Searchers (1956)

Edit: Added Stagecoach which I had missed.

Pretty deficient in my Ford viewing. The one I'd like to see the most is Fort Apache.

Not one of my favorite directors. He made some truly great films, but some really awful ones, including one I despise for reasons I won't go into here to avoid a rehash of the debate. :)

JOHN FORD

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) - :star::star::star::star: - Ford at his very best, a swan song to the classic western iconography

The Searchers (1956) - :star::star::star::star: - There's something about this film that's just so damn good despite the fact that it's something of a gauntlet and a big fuck you, take or leave it, type of film.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) - :star::star::star:1/2 - Nathan pisses me off something fierce, but he's a hell of an icon and I love the photography, stunning and breathtaking.

My Darling Clementine (1946) - :star::star::star:...:star: - I can't get that shot of Fonda at the tombstone, monument valley in the background out of my head. Can't wait to watch the extended version, my DVD has been waiting and waiting for a chance. :)

How Green Was My Valley (1941) - :star::star::star::star: - I really don't give a shit of how things are supposed to play, sure it's somewhat hokey and sometimes didactic, but jesus christ it works by the end of the film and there's a hell of a lot going for it, and the photography is so subtly stunning.

The Grapes of Wrath (1940) - :star::star::star::star: - seriously need to see this again, like very soon. :)

Young Mr. Lincoln (1939) - :star::star::star::star: - Hell it works, and it might even knock your socks off, the way they made Fonda look like he was 6+ is quite damn effective.

Stagecoach (1939) - :star::star::star::star: - terribly underrated these days, I need to watch it again, but I found it incredibly effective, and dripping with astonishing economy of brilliant characterization--it's almost a play that way.

Wee Willie Winkie (1937) - :star::star::star: - a film that's way better than it has any right to be, when Temple passes on, the oscars better fing use that Auld Lang Syne clip or I'll throw a coniption fit.

The Informer (1935) - :star::star::star:1/2 - a bit like M but held back because the main character is so profoundly, heartbreakingly stupid--incredible photography and a great McLaglin performance

Judge Priest (1934) - :star::star::star: - Will Rogers is a hoot but Stepin Fetchit is annoying to be disrupting a charming film and world--classic programmer dramedy done right.

The Lost Patrol (1934) - :star::star::star:1/2 - the potential to be perfect but never quite gets there, a bit of cheese hanging around I think... influenced Kurosawa, I imagine, though.

Arrowsmith (1931) - :star:1/2 - Disapointing effort, interesting story, but just disapointing all around. weak acting, terrible script, poorly concieved story and an over reliance on melodramatic plot devices that smash you over the head.

----

new viewings:

Drums Along the Mohawk - :star::star::star:1/2 - Great programmer fun, characters a bit thin, but damn well made

Prisoner of Shark Island - :star::star::star::star: - damn strong piece of work that ranks among his best thirties efforts.

They Were Expendable - :star::star::star::star: - Damn excellent cinematography, and Wayne is riveting.

I'm willing to give The Searchers another chance, even though I doubt I'll find it's message less odious the second time around.

Mary of Scotland - :star::star:1/2
Excellent performance from Katherine Hepburn, big Scottish Brogue from Fredrich March and no sizzle to their chemistry, which is too bad, but when Mary goes off the soap opera the film keeps perking back up. An excellent ending but a bit visually dull up to then, in fact the attempted attack on the castle is humerous for how ineffective the filmmaking is at shooting this 'action' scene. Best bit of the movie is the final twenty thirty minutes, with Mary's trial and the conversation at when Mary and Elizabeth are brought together for the first time
