HOWARD HAWKS

I've only seen two Hawks films, Rio Bravo and Bringing Up Baby. I liked Rio Bravo, but didn't find a great deal to interest me in Bringing Up Baby. There are a few more that I'd like to see, but I'm in no big rush.

The Big Sleep (1946)
Rio Bravo (1959)
Bringing Up Baby (1938)

Edit: Saw The Big Sleep and absolutely loved it.

For my money, Hawks is the greatest American film-maker ever. His films not only offer entertainment value of the highest order in practically every case, but are also insightful examinations of the bonds of friendship as well as the male/female relationship in this crazy society of ours. For the record, Cary Grant is my favorite actor, HIS GIRL FRIDAY is my No. 4 favorite film, THE BIG SLEEP is my Top "Noir" and RED RIVER is my No. 3 Western. I guess you can deduce from this that I love the man's work:D!

I would love to watch THE DAWN PATROL (1930) and THE ROAD TO GLORY (1936).

P.S. If COME AND GET IT (on which Hawks was replaced by William Wyler) merits a mention, so should VIVA VILLA! (on which Hawks was replaced by Jack Conway when he refused to fire Lee Tracy for his drunken antics on the set!).

Updated to include Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Funny stuff, filled with a bit of risque humor and double entendre. Marilyn is excellent as the quintessential dumb blonde, who knows how to get what she wants. Jane Russell is equally good as her sassy and sage buddy. Some of the songs are so-so, but the "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" number is superbly choreographed. The film is slightly marred by the corny ending.
