DIRECTOR FILMOGRAPHY - The Films of ALFRED HITCHCOCK
Looks like there’s enough interest in this for me to keep going, which I'll try to post at least one a day. Might as well follow-up with one of the bigger giants of cinema for part 2. Rank ‘em, rate ‘em, review ‘em or whatever.

May have seen Topaz, Family Plot, and Torn Curtain on tv way back when, but couldn't tell ya anything about 'em. Want to see The Lodger.

I’m really lacking when it comes to silent films.
Me too, though I've made Saturday nights my official "watch-a-silent-movie" night. I've knocked off a slew of Doug Fairbanks films; now I need to work on the Langs that I have plus the Buster Keaton set.

I'm much better on Hitchcock, though there are some of his harder to find films I haven't seen.

I'm curious if anyone who's seen Under Capricorn doesn't agree that it's his worst film. I'd be surprised, but you never know around here. :)

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Family Plot (1976) - :star::star::star:1/2 - good comic Hitch

Frenzy (1972) - :star::star::star::star: - latter day Hitch at his best

Topaz (1969) - :star: - latter day Hitch at his worst

Torn Curtain (1966) - :star::star::star: - the right stars makes it work

The Birds (1963) - :star::star::star: - the suspense is brilliant that lead is not

Psycho (1960) - :star::star::star::star: - perfection

North by Northwest (1959) - :star::star::star::star: - brilliant gobbledygook

Vertigo (1958) - :star::star::star::star: - sheer genius

The Wrong Man (1956) - :star::star::star:1/2 - fogotten, but outstanding gem, great cast

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) - :star::star::star::star: - fluffy Hitch at his best, and that song is catchy too

The Trouble with Harry (1955) - :star::star::star::star: - Hitch's best black comedy

To Catch a Thief (1955) - :star::star::star:1/2 - fluffy Hitch that's damned good fun

Rear Window (1954) - :star::star::star::star: - took me a while but it is definitely perfect

Dial M for Murder (1954) - :star::star:1/2 - we've seen this before and better

I Confess (1953) - 1/2 - Hitch at his self indulgent worst, good lead performance though

Strangers on a Train (1951) - :star::star::star::star: - How is a film like this, this damn good?

Rope (1948) - :star::star::star: - it works, it really does work very f-ing well

Notorious (1946) - :star::star::star::star: - takes a while to warm too but it has such a lovely glow

Spellbound (1945) - :star::star:1/2 - a bit of a stretcher, eh?

Lifeboat (1944) - :star::star::star::star: - surprisingly brilliant piece

Shadow of a Doubt (1943) - :star::star::star::star: - Hitch's best pre fifties US film

Saboteur (1942) - :star::star: - hey wait, I saw this once before

Rebecca (1940) - :star::star::star::star: - how he got such a good film out of such a bad novel I'll never know

The Lady Vanishes (1938) - :star::star::star::star: - Fluffy Hitch perfection to rival his fifties peak

Sabotage (1936) - :star::star::star:1/2 - brilliant piece of shocking and suspenseful filmmaking

Secret Agent (1936) - :star::star:1/2 - good performances, but just never gels

The 39 Steps (1935) - :star::star::star:1/2 - a journeyman work of surpassing elegance and confidence, one of his best

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) - :star::star::star: - damn good bit of entertainment.

Blackmail (1929) - :star::star::star: - Brilliant work, regardless of the year of production, but especially so for 29

The Lodger (1927) - :star::star::star: - Ahh, Hitch is born, but the question is, was the lead really really the killer? I think so.

The Mountain Eagle (1926) LOST

The Pleasure Garden (1925) LOST

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Well, clearly I haven't seen enough films. I'll have to remedy that. I've only seen a few Hitchcocks, some of which I consider absolute masterpieces, some not so much. Here are the ones I've seen ranked in order of my preference.

Rear Window (1954)

North by Northwest (1959)

Psycho (1960)

Vertigo (1958)

The Birds (1963)

Notorious (1946)

Rebecca (1940)

The Master. My rough rankings:
1. North by Northwest
2. Vertigo
3. Rear Window
4. Notorious
5. Psycho
6. The Man Who Knew Too Much (54)
7. The Lady Vanishes
8. Rebecca
9. Strangers on a Train
10 To Catch a Thief
11 Frenzy
12 The 39 Steps
13 Marnie
14 Spellbound
I own most of the above on DVD. I have also seen Saboteur and The Birds, but didn't care too much for either.
If anyone wants to actually take the time to look at my list and make a suggestion as to what Hitchcock film is the best that I haven't seen, please do so (I am leaning towards Foreign Correspondent and Dial M for Murder).

Those would both be good choices. I did notice the absence of Shadow of a Doubt (which is what I'd suggest), which I think is one of Hitchcock's most overlooked & underrated films.

I'm not even going to swat that fly. I hope they are watching... they'll see. They'll see and they'll know, and they'll say, "Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly..."
