Eric, I share your appreciation for substantial biographical documentaries. Thanks for the list. There are a few on there that I was not aware of. Hopefully, others who read this thread may be able to come up with a few more.

I understand that this coming Tuesday, there will be a couple more. "Men Who Made The Movies - Vincente Minelli" will be on the new Band Wagon 2 disc. And an American Masters profile of Judy Garland will be on the new Easter Parade 2-disc.

well there's a "Biography" documentary about Vincent Price in the release of "Laura".

it's 40 mins long, but's good and quite entertaining.

The "Laura" release also contains a "Biography" doc on Gene Tierney, so you get two for the price of one! The "Biography" mini-docs are probably the best extras that Fox offers on their classic releases.

Also, it hasn't come out yet, but the Errol Flynn set will contain a documentary on his quite entertaining life.

Don't know if it fits your request exactly, but the documentary on Cleopatra is one of the best I've seen on that specific era of Hollywood

Thanks guys. I was aware of most of the upcoming releases except for the docs on Laura. I will update the list with those titles.

Yeah, it doesn't really fit what I'm looking for here, but without a doubt it is definitely one of the best documentaries that I've ever seen. In fact, I've had the disc since it was released, but have never watched the movie, only the doc.:b

Most of these were orginally shown as either installments of A&E's Biography series or as Turner Classic Movies specials. On the whole, I've seen most of these and there are indeed fabulous in their reverence to their subjects and the clips used.

On a related matter, there was a real disaster with Fox's Cleopatra DVD set. It includes the 2-hour AMC documentary on the making of the film, but there are no chapter stops whatsoever in the entire documentary! How stupid can you get??? If you stop in the middle of the documentary, you have to start allover again and FF 'til you reach the point you left off. I hope those yahoos at Fox have learened from this!

I'd like to add another great documentry that isn't on the list:

"The Battle Over Citizen Kane" on the Citizen Kane DVD.
Great biography on both Orson Welles and William Randolph Hearst. Two hours long and nominated for an Oscar to boot! :)

"The Hills Have Eyes" DVD from Anchor Bay contains the entire "Directors" doc on Wes Craven. Very entertaining. The "Directors" discs were at one time available separately... they're pretty scarce to buy new separately now. I really enjoyed all of the ones I've seen.

Heroes of Horror features five 45 min. docs on Bela Lugosi: Hollywood's Dark Prince, Boris Karloff: The Gentle Monster, Lon Chaney, Jr.: Son Of A Thousand Faces, Peter Lorre: The Master Of Menance, & Vincent Price: The Versatile Villian. I think it's from Biography but I'm not sure. It's really good.

Marcello Mastroianni: I Remember

At over three hours it covers the legendary actor's amazing career. It's very funny and very beautifully put together. Mastroianni is one of my 'Heroes of Cinema'. A must for fans.

Yeah, those are great documentaries, Eric.

I love the whole Martini-obsession that Buñuel had! I thought I was alone!
