Just got a company email that I thought might interest people on the forum. I had heard a little about HD broadcasts but did not know they were going to be in 5.1 surround sound or much else about them.
Anyways the email is below and the link goes into more detail.

Harris People, Products Play Key Role in First Live,
Nationwide HD Radio 5.1 Surround Sound Broadcast

Harris rang in 2005 with yet another broadcast technology milestone when its products and people helped make possible the first live, nationwide HD Radio™ 5.1 surround sound broadcast.

“The broadcast was not only historic, it was flawless and stunning. An incredible achievement given the uncharted logistics of launching new technologies across nine time zones,” said Mike Starling, vice president of Engineering and Operations for National Public Radio. “What an awesome start for radio in 2005!”
