On the messageboard at the official Kevin Smith website

http://viewaskew.com...board/index.php

someone asked if there was going to be any 10th Anniversary event at the mall where the movie was filmed and Kevin replied:

So there is going to be a 10th Anniversary Edition DVD.

I'll be honest, there would have to be something truly significant done to a 10th anniversary edition to make me double dip on this one. The first release was completely loaded and already had a good A/V presentation. I just can't possibly think of anything they could add to this that would make me want to buy it again.

The Clerks 10th Anniversary was great and I didn't mind double-dipping. And this will only be the second edition of Mallrats - not the third or fourth. I'm sure they'll add a lot of new things. I expect at least a new audio commentary (maybe with Claire Forlani and/or Shannon Doherty added to the usual crowd?), a Q&A session with the entire cast and a new documentary.

Knowing Smith, I wouldn't be surprised if the Mallrats 10th Anniversary Disc is similar to the Clerks 10th Anniversary set, with a new documentary, commentary, and *hopefully* the unintentionally hilarious Edited-for-Television version of the film.

I'm with Mike on this one. Mallrats is a great DVD already, no need for a double dip just because of an annniversary. Enough is enough. -Ben

Yep enough is enough current DVD is great. Which reminds me I flogged my Clerks DVD so I could get the new one but still haven't gotten round to it.

Jeez, I remember back when it was almost impossible to convince Universal to even consider a special laserdisc edition of Mallrats... My how times (and the fortunes of this film) have changed. As for a new edition, they could get Universal to get the extra footage out of the vaults and remaster the deleted scenes... all the stuff on the current DVD is from a VHS dub. Some of the bits ended up in the TV cut, obviously looking better. There's also a cheesy soundtrack EPK with comments from Kevin about the songs on the CD that would be cool to include. They could also include some galleries of material that only appeared in the long-out-of-print Mallrats book (including Rene's letter to Brodie, excerpts from Tricia's book, and a diary entry from Gwen that hinted at what was coming in "Chasing Amy"). There are also some outtakes floating around that might be interesting. I have a tape of some dailies from the film which includes Jason Mewes doing some alternate lines for the part where he yelled "Fly, fat-ass, fly!" Might I also suggest (if anyone in the know is lurking) finding some people who attended the early screening of "Mallrats" at the San Diego Comic-Con in July '95. Maybe some fan out there has some tape of the event, or some of those who attended could give their impressions.

Anupdated transfer would be okay as well as sound. IIRC, this was 2.0 and non-anamorphic. Even if it was anamorphic, I'm sure they can update it. Not that it's bad as it is, but there is always room for improvement. Kevin Smith might be constantly pimping out his stuff, but at least the quality is usually pretty high.

This is great news. Now how long is this going to take to be released? I can't wait to see it since the original is OOP.

That's what I'd like to know. I just got in to Smith's movies right around the time this DVD went out of print and I finally saw it over the summer and absolutely loved it. I've been hunting down the old DVD and have had 0 luck so I hope this comes out soon.

It also makes you wonder what they do to the dvds that they can't sell and take off the shelves. I was really tempted to ask one of the sales people if i could buy it anyway.

The current Mallrats DVD, in fact, contains a 5.1 audio track and *is* anamorphic. And it looks great, IMHO. No amount of extras will convince me to pay for Mallrats a second time, I'm afraid.

I would be happy if the regular DVD was no longer OOP. So, I'm all for a Mallrats X :-)

They'd have to re-shoot the film and add in some porn scenes with Clare Furlani to get me to buy this again...and I'm the biggest Smith fan I know. Shoot, I have the signed Chasing Amy poster hanging in my living room. I know why this is being done (money), but why? Please Kev, concentrate on the next flick.

Given that the first release is out-of-print, I'm not sure that I understand everyone's problem with a Mallrats X. It's not uncommon for out-of-print titles to be re-issued with many more bonus features than the original release, and surely those who already own the original release need not buy another release if they don't want to. There's no reason to deny a new release to anyone who doesn't already own the movie, is there?

I don't get why people are always putting this movie down. It's not his best - but still a lot of fun. If I had to rank Kevin Smith's movies it would look like this: 1.Dogma 2.Chasing Amy 3.Clerks 4.Mallrats 5.Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back 6.Jersey Girl

It's a standard practice for Universal now to let some of their popular catalog titles go out-of-print and them reissue them (look at Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Dazed & Confused). Since Mallrats has been a popular catalog title, I wouldn't be surprised if it was their idea to go for another version. Sure, it's double-dipping, but since it came out in like '98-99, it's not as 'evil' as releasing a new movie on DVD and then putting out a special edition three months later with no notice.
