Robert DeNiro tops a list of greatest living movie stars in a poll conducted for Empire magazine, the UK's top selling movie magazine. Last year another poll had Pacino at no.1 with DeNiro no.2.

1. Robert De Niro
2. Al Pacino
3. Jack Nicholson
4. Paul Newman
5. Marlon Brando
6. Anthony Hopkins
7. Morgan Freeman
8. Dustin Hoffman
9. Clint Eastwood
10. Sigourney Weaver

11. Gene Hackman
12. Harrison Ford
13. Sean Connery
14. Meryl Streep
15. Ian McKellen
16. Christopher Lee
17. Sidney Poitier
18. Robert Redford
19. Alan Rickman
20. Judi Dench

21. Samuel L Jackson
22. Peter O'Toole
23. Bill Murray
24. Albert Finney
25. Woody Allen
26. Helen Mirren
27. Christopher Walken
28. Ben Kingsley
29. Lauren Bacall
30. John Hurt

Alien slayer Signourney Weaver voted top Actress again I'm happy to say, and very nice to see the old Count Christopher Lee entering the list, oh and look Bill Murray's in there too. ;)

Whaaat? No Denzel? That's the biggest omission I can see, get Woody Allen out, Denzel Washington in.

"Marlon Brando died before voting was completed..."

Now that Brando has passed on, I think that Hackman should take his place at #5. It's a crime he's not in the top ten and that Sigourney Weaver (Empire's token actress in this poll) is ahead of him, basically on the strength of two films.

Well, I guess this isn't reflected on any movies that DeNiro has been in recently.....

Pretty good list, though. I think Christopher Lee should be a bit higher. I love Harrison Ford, but don't know that I would have him that high. He's had some great roles, but that's awfully high in my opinion.

Before people start listing actors that they wanted to see on the list, take notice that the list is of actors over 50. That is why there is no Sean Penn, Tom Hanks or Denzel Washington.

What about Patrick Stewart?

You've got to be kidding me. He's known to most people as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and possibly Professor Xavier. He may be a great actor, but his star power is not that big.

This accolade comes, despite Bobby's nauseating prediliction for starring in unmitigated garbage over the past several years.

No disrespect to a guy who is clearly a brilliant actor, but, I mean....

Showtime, The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle, Godsend, Analyze That, Men of Honor, Shark Tale...

When did Robert De Niro become Michael Caine? :D

Hey! I liked him in Shark Tale! ;)

Whatever happened to Bobby De Niro? After the double whammy of Casino and Heat in 1995 he's rarely flexed his acting muscles, here's a list of post 1995 films he's made, courtesy of IMDB.

Shark Tale (2004)
Godsend (2004)
Analyze That (2002)
City by the Sea (2002)
Showtime (2002)
Score, The (2001)
15 Minutes (2001)
Meet the Parents (2000)
Men of Honor (2000
Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000)
Flawless (1999)
Analyze This (1999)
Ronin (1998)
Great Expectations (1998)
Jackie Brown (1997)
Wag the Dog (1997)
Cop Land (1997)
Marvin's Room (1996)
Sleepers (1996)
Fan, The (1996)

If I had to pick one favorite from that list it would be Ronin not so much for De Niro but for being the last great Frankenheimer thriller and containing arguably the greatest car chases put on film.

That's funny. Not even close.

I find the omission of Tom Hanks really bizarre. He is the closest thing to a living classic american actor today.

I’m pretty sure people are missing the whole “over 50” criteria. I’m also thinking Empire is talking more about “star brightness” rather than “acting prowess” or maybe it is a little bit of both, dunno, I guess we would need to have access to the original article(if it is even available yet).

Unfortunately there is no mention if there is an “English Language” stipulation to this list. Seeing as how no non-English language actors are represented, I’m assuming this is the case. If not, in the very least I’m pretty sure there’s some 50+ Ozu/Kurosawa film actors out there still alive(though Mifune is unfortunately not). Jackie Chan is 50 me thinks(but not “over” fifty so I guess he missed by a year), and undoubtedly there are many 50+ French, Italian, German, and so on stars out there no on the list. Owells, I guess bitching about the list should be put on hold till we know all the criteria. :)

edit: Is John Cleese not a big star in England?

edit2: Hrm actually the foreign language folks are probably out due to the fact that this is a UK Poll, and not an editor's list, wonder if it was all write in, or if it was a select from a list poll. I assume it was select from a list to keep the age and life factors from being problems.

He's doing his best impression of Michael Caine's (later life) film choices. Acting! Brilliant! :)

Speaking of which ... where is Alfie?

It is strange that Sir Michael Caine isn't on the list and Sir Ben Kingsley is.

Ben of course is best known for playing The Hood in Thunderbirds 2004. ;)

[rant]"Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!"[/rant] *

* No not Meg Ryan, Ben Kingsley's memorable nutjob villain Logan in Sexy Beast.
