My wife and I both love the small soft ice nuggets that some restaurant ice machines make. We would love to get a machine for home but I can't seem to find anything small enough. I really don't need 700lbs of ice a day and finding a place to put a machine that big would be a bit of a challenge. I just keep thinking that somewhere, someone must make a machine of this type for rich folks (not that I am one) who want restaurant ice at home. Has anyone every seen one?

My family calls this type of ice, "rabbit pellet" ice.

Food for thought!:D

We're planning our kitchen remodel and were considering an ice machine. I was not thinking about the "rabbit pellets" but just one of those machines that look like a half width dishwasher. My thinking was that if a fridge ice maker costs about $100, then one of these "mini freezers" should only run $300 or so.

The cheapest one I found was about $800 and most run more than $1000. I finally asked an appliance dealer why these were so expensive. His explanation was that a normal fridge icemaker makes ice and then stores it until you use it and then it makes more. The ice can pick up all sorts of odors from your freezer. An icemaker is continually making ice to keep it fresh. The ice at the bottom of the machine melts and drains away. This way it maintains a constant supply of fresh ice. This requires a more heavy duty ice making machine.

It's been 7 years since your question and I was wondering if you had any luck finding a home nugget ice machine and if so, where in the world did you find it?

I'm curious too. I make mocha ice blendeds at home (from The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf) and while buy their extract and chocolate powder (which should in theory make my drinks identical to theirs) the only remaining difference is the type of ice used. My blender won't blend standard ice cubes to the same consistency that they get with their nugget ice. The flavor of my drinks is nearly the same, it's the consistency that accounts for the difference between my drinks and the store's drinks.

Scotsman has finally come out with a new NUGGET ICE machine that will produce up to 125lbs/24hrs and has a 22lb capacity bin. The starting price is $2,495.00 and comes with a pump drain for those who don't have a floor drain. You can purchase the gravity drain machine for $150.00 less but you must either have a floor drain or cut a hole in your wall and let it drain to the ground outside. These will be available starting Sept 15th 2011 and if you desire to purchase one, email me and we'll take care of it for you. [email protected] Scotsman is one of the top brand ice makers and is manufactured right here in the USA. Regards, Michael

I really can't see a dedicated ICE as a practical addition to a residential kitchen. If they are constantly making ice to replace melted ice they must use up a lot of power and water over the course of a year besides the fact that they take up a lot of space which is always at a premium in a house. I would actually think they would be seen as more of a minus then a plus when going to sell a house.

While I do hate replying to the above shill, I will say I intend on putting in a separate ice machine in my next home. I don't intend on having an ice maker in the fridge/freezer so you end up with more freezer space and the dedicated ice machines generally dont have the same problems the fridge units have.
