A gentleman made a post on one of the forums that I moderate and stated that this was to be a 3-cd set and there will be a DVD issued with it for a limited time. Everyone called him a liar. Turns out, he works for Universal Canada. Then it shows up here: http://www.avopolis....ult.asp?ID=5427

Babelfish translates it pretty poorly, but enough to understand that:
Quote:
In the content we will meet all hits, live ihografi'sejs (concerts?), infrequent pieces, b sides and above 50 akyklofo'rites ihografi'sejs (cobain solo pieces). Ana'mesa' (?) the many of demo Cobain, hours of unpublished music but alsooptical material that never did not reach in the screens.

Then Billboard: http://www.billboard...._id=1000624669

So, it is official. Rasmus, the owner of the Nirvana Fan Club site, said that this is what he started the site 8 years ago for. Finally, we Nirvana fans have got some good news to look forward to.
If it wasn't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college.

I will snag this up. A bonus DVD would be great....also Unplugged on dvd and other stuff would be great too. But I'm going to be happy for this to begin with.

Here's a post with a little more about it from NFC: The Internet Nirvana Fan Club...

Quote:
This is it, guys. The best news I've been able to post
since this website started some eight years ago ... A
Nirvana box set will be released on November 23, 2004.

This is the box we've been waiting for since the rumours
about it first started more than six years ago. It will
include 3 CD's and one DVD, featuring "previously unreleased
rarities and b-sides. Over 50 unreleased recordings including
Kurt Cobain's demos". The DVD will also contain unseen footage
and live performances. And, the whole thing comes with a 60-page
booklet! I know this sounds just about too good to be true
but here is the official info and all I know about the project right now:

NIRVANA BOX SET - 3 CD & 1 DVD
- Street Date: Nov. 23, 2004
- Features the hits, live performances, previously unreleased rarities and b-sides
- Over 50 unreleased recordings including Kurt Cobain's demos
- Hours of unheard music and unseen footage
- Features a 60 page booklet. DVD with first edition only
- 3-panel digipack, front cover is a metal plate
- Closed size is 26cm x 14.5cm x 2.5cm. Open size is 81cm x 14.5cm

I don't have pricing, artwork or tracklistings at this time but
hopefully that will be available soon. I also don't know yet, if
any singles, promos or videos will be released in connection with
the box. All I do know is that what millions of Nirvana fans have
been waiting for since 1997 or so is finally here. I really have
no idea what recordings they have used to compile this set. Indeed,
some of the Cobain demos must come from all the cassette tapes that
he apparently left behind. The band also did a number of studio sessions
which yielded songs that have yet to be released - although much of
this material is already circulating amongst fans. It will certainly
also be interesting to see what the DVD has to offer; perhaps Nirvana's
music videos and some live stuff. It seems unlikely from the
description that an entire concert is presented on the DVD.
It's probably clips from various shows.

In any case, this is a great day for Nirvana fans!

More details! Just remember the US release date is November 23.

From http://www.nme.com/news/110171.htm

Quote:
The long-awaited Nirvana box set 'WITH THE LIGHTS OUT' will feature 68 previously unreleased recordings.

Released on November 22, the four-disc set will feature 81 tracks including 68 previously unreleased recordings - rehearsals, outtakes, Kurt's home demos, as well as a DVD which is confirmed to have unreleased band home movies, live footage, rehearsal footage and 20 full-length video performances. A 60-page booklet will accompany the release.

The title is a reference to a lyric in 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.

A source told NME.COM: “I’ve seen some of the footage and it’s amazing stuff. There’s a video of them performing at a friend's party with Kurt reading lyrics off a sheet of paper on the wall, footage of them covering 'Seasons In The Sun' in a studio with Kurt on drums and lots of other great stuff.”

The artwork for the set is currently being put together, with the likely choice being a ‘landscape’ box, retailing in the region of £40-50.
(My emphasis added)

This set keeps sounding better and better to me. Posted Image

I also found some speculation as to what will be on the set. This is from www.nirvanaclub.com

Quote:
Now that the fabled Nirvana box set is supposedly only some six weeks shy of being released officially, I have put together a list of recordings that could potentially be included. Obviously, not all of the recordings on my list will feature on the box but it is certain that some of them will. The list represents most of the unreleased material and many recordings that have been very much sought after by Nirvana fans for years. The list concludes with a handful of recordings that, while very much in demand, will most likely not be included. Note that pretty much none of the recordings listed below are guaranteed to be in the box. The list is based on interviews, articles, rumours and guesswork on my part.

For the CD's:
# Songs from 4/90 session at Smart Studios in Madison, WI.
# "Token Eastern Song" and possibly other songs from the 1/1/91 session at Music Source Studios.
# "Song in D", "Old Age", "Verse Chorus Verse" and possibly other outtakes from 1991 'Nevermind' recordings.
# "Old Age", "Verse Chorus Verse" and possibly other songs from March 1991 boombox recording.
# "Do You Love Me?" from June 1989 session in Olympia, WA.
# "Dough, Ray, and Me" (4-track rendition and/or solo acoustic demo recorded in KC bedroom)
# Songs from 4/17/87 KAOS Radio show
# Songs from BBC John Peel radio sessions
# Songs from 1/22/93 Rio sessions
# "The Butch Vig raw mix of Teen Spirit"
# In Utero outtakes
# Jams/work-in-progress tracks from 1/94 session in Seattle, WA (possibly including a song called "Skid Mark")
# A recording of the song "Opinion" (most likely a solo acoustic version by Kurt Cobain)
# "Ain't It A Shame" from August 1989 studio session in Seattle, WA.
# "If You Must", "Pen Cap Chew" and possibly other unreleased songs from January 1988 session.
# "Blandest" from June-September 88 session.
# "About a Girl" (unreleased studio version)
# Songs from 9/89 Blew EP session.
# "Oh The Guilt", "Curmudgeon" and/or "Return of the rat" from April 1992 session.
# Kurt Cobain demos (from the '110 tapes of shit' that Courtney Love spoke of a few years back)
# "A lot of weird outtakes, some jams, and some acoustic demos" -- Butch Vig, March 2003.

... and for the DVD:
# Footage from a 1987 house party -- Billboard 2004.
# Performance for French TV on February 4, 1994.
# Club Lingerie performance with Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love (9/8/93)
# 10/31/91 Seattle, WA video footage.
# Reading Festival 1992 video footage.
# Nirvana's music videos.
# "Rare promo of 'In Bloom'" -- NME, October 2004.

... and songs/sessions that are less likely to be included:
# December 1985 "Fecal Matter Demo" recorded at Mari Earl's house.
# "Sappy" from January 2-3, 1990 session in Seattle, WA with Jack Endino.
# Complete 9/25/90 performance for KAOS Radio.
# 1/16/93, 8/6/93 or 3/1/94 concert footage (audio or video).
# Dale Crover bedroom demos from January 1988.
# "Barnyard demos" (Sad, Cracker, Seed, Misery Loves Company etc.)
# Final Jack Endino session with Nirvana, 25-26 October 1992.

Here are a few more details!

First off, Geffen Records has officially announced that it is coming out next month. http://www.geffen.co...sp?newsID=14466

Second, Geffen has put up an offical website for the set.
http://www.nirvanabox.com/

Finally, LiveDaily.com says that the set will include a 60 page full-color booklet with a chronology of the band and rare photos, and there will be liner notes written by Thurston Moore from the band Sonic Youth. They also report that there will be a music video made for one of the songs on the set, just like they did with "You Know You're Right" from the greatest hits compilation a few years ago. There will also be a 30 minute special about the set that will be aired on MTV2.

Being that they took the time to create a website for this box, it's a real shame that they didn't put any effort into providing a tracklisting. Posted Image

The tracklisting hasn't been revealed to the public yet. Geffen probably has it determined, but they just want to keep it under wraps for some reason. They have said that the tracklisting will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Here is the possible coverart (which is posted over at www.amazon.de):

That's my only problem with the box set. Well, other than Geffen being so goddamn secretive. Posted Image

Another interesting thing related to Nirvana. Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic made their first public appearance together in almost 10 years last Tuesday at a rally supporting John Kerry. Dave is on the left, and Krist is on the right side.
