The top 4 for me were easy, the last 6 took some thinking.

10 - Fiona Apple
9 - Rolling Stones
8 - The Temptations
7 - Alice In Chains
6 - Tool/A Perfect Circle (am I cheating for grouping these two together?)
5 - Black Sabbath
4 - Jimi Hendrix

And my favorite band of all time is:

1 - Led Zeppelin

I'd love to hear all of your favorites as well !

Sorry, have to break the rule about order of preference. Too much of that depends on my mood.

But here are my top 10 favorite bands or musical artists:

1. Led Zeppelin
2. Grey Eye Glances
3. BoDeans
4. Rich Mullins
5. October Project
6. Rush
7. Evanescence*
8. Jars of Clay
9. U2
10. Hans Zimmer (done some great movie scores)

There are TONS of other artists I love, and narrowing it down to even 10 top listings is difficult!

*based on how many times I've listened to the CD in my car over the last 15 months!

Rather than choose, I'll put my mouth where my money is. A quick survey of my music collection shows the most tracks from the following artists:

1- The Beatles
2- Frank Zappa
3- Neil Young
4- Jethro Tull
5- Tonio K.
6- Yes
7- Emerson, Lake and Palmer
8- R.E.M.
10- Jefferson Airplane

I'm sure Cream, among others, belongs in there somewhere, but there you have it.

1 David Bowie
2 U2 (later phase)
3 Eurythmics
4 Sam Phillips
5 Stuart Davis
6 Adam Ant
7 Thomas Dolby
8 Paul Westerberg
9 Erin McKeown
10 Robyn Hitchcock

Every one of these folks are brilliant, but the higher placings are for those who are more consistently so, or who have steadily reemerged with genius works after time away (that means you, Davie!). So a sometimes-genius like Paul Westerberg comes in fairly low because he turns out more dreck than gems.

The names are linked to official or sanctioned sites with official or sanctioned mp3s, for those who want to check them out.
