Looks like it's a great HT in the making. Mind if I ask why you didn't run conduit for your wires (A/V that is)?

Looks like you have a great start! Nice sized room too. One thing that bothers me though, is that I don't see staggard studs. At this point, I think that it's really important for you to look at staggard studs, Resiliant Channel, and double sheetrock with a mastic layer. A good book to learn about all of this is, "Premium Home Theater" Design and Construction by Earl Geddes.

Frank... no reason in particular. I can access the attic above the theater so it wouldn't be so difficult to pull wire if the occasion arrose. Might not have been a bad thing to do from the start though.

Rutgar... I follow you on the sound control but I don't understand on the staggar stud issue, what is that about? Everyone has been so impressed with the stacked framing so far, I was surprised to see you brought that up. I am looking into the other items you mentioned. Budget is already shot so I am trying my best to maintain without building a terrible room.

I really appreciate the advice from you guys, I need all I can get!

Looks good. Scott, I have to convert the images to links so that the thread can load faster for dialup folks.

Regarding the conduit, you have access to pull the wires from above (the attic), will you have space on the sides to pull up wire and/or pull it back down. What I am trying to find out is if you would benefit from having a conduit to bring the cabling up to the ceiling.

Staggerd studs are a common technique used to build a "room within a room". It's the single most effective way to keep sound in the theater, from transfering outside of the room. Here is link that shows a picture of how the studs should be placed:

http://www.acoustiblok.com/instal.html

I believe it's mainly done for sound containment, and not for acoustic reasons. Whereas, the resiliant channel, and double sheetrock with a mastic layer, is more for room acoustics in the bass region. Many of the theaters featured on Home Theater Forum use these methods. I would suggest looking through the many pictures, and contacting the one's who use this techique. You can also find out a lot info on Web using "Google", as well as from the book I mentioned.

Since your studs are already in place, it might be a bit of an expense, because you would have to add width to the bottom and top plates of your walls, and then double up on the studs.

Neil... I'll use links from now on, sorry about that. Guess I figured the whole world was on broadband!

Rutgar... thanks for elaborating, I'm on board now. Thanks too for the link, that's great information. My main issue is budget. The things you speak of are conducive to a superior room but I'm not sure that I can float the funds at this stage of the game. I am considerably over budget already (I knew I would be). I am cramming insulation everywhere I can and I can place external sound panels in the room if need be once complete.

Sure hope this all comes together well, I think it will. I will have a few pics to post in a few hours of today's progress.

Thanks again to everyone, what a grand hobby this is.

Okay, a few additions... mainly recessed lighting for the center of the room. Oh, and I did make the switch to the Tannoy's, I really enjoyed the time I spent with them. Thanks to Jamie at The Home Theater Store for spending so much time with me and my decision making process!

Scott,

As Rutgar noted, staggered stud construction is primarily for soundproofing. If containing the sound is not a situation you are concerned with, then there’s no reason to be worried about it.

Thanks Wayne. I live on two acres... no neighbor issue. Also, the master bedroom is on the other end of the house... again, not an issue. Two of our three kids are in the Army... not an issue.

I should be fine without all the sound containment. I do appreciate all the advice though. This is the third site I have posted on and I have received far more feedback (and more productive) here than anywhere, you guys are great!

Sheetrock delivered today (not much to take pics of really).

Anybody have advice on a door going into the HT? I was thinking of an exterior grade door/frame with a good seal, maybe one with a leaded glass window.

Any thoughts?

Scott,

I love watching a build-in-progress, yours is looking great!

I do have a question though: it looks like you used a faced-batting which doesn't require a vapor barrier, and then an exterior grade housewrap on the inside. Housewrap is not really a vapor barrier and is permiable, and AFAIK intended on the outside to let moisture escape. Typically a non-permiable barrier is used on the inside via faced-batting or poly. I know two vapor barriers are never recommended together as moisture could get trapped between the layers. You always want an escape path, and with stick construction you want moisture to escape outwards (buildingscience-dot-com (I still can't post links) does recommend having moisture escape inwards for below-grade construction)

FWIW www-dot-buildingscience-dot-com is a great place to see recommended construction techniques for moisture handling. (Note sub "." for the "-dot-" stuff as I can't post links yet)

Jim Ski... I really had intended for it to be installed on the wall between the old part of the house and the new construction. I wanted a barrier there to keep the massive heat from the attic from traveling into the media room through the 6" or so opening all the way across the room. The guys decided to go around everything since there was so much wrap on hand. Hope a huge mistake was not made in using all the wrap... that would suck. I'll chaeck out the site you spoke of too, sounds like I should have read infor there first!

I'll keep the pictures coming all the way through the project. Thanks Parker and Jim for the kind words.

Holy cow... what a mess this sheetrock is! It will be much worse when they start mudding and sanding!

sheetrocking/mudding is a mess, but after that it'll really come to life! I can barely express the joy of not looking at rough-in electrical, networking, and HVAC.

Wow - it looks very professional. Even all the studs are equal distance apart. Great job. I am still in the proces of doing mine, been about 8 months now. But I should have some updated pictures in 2 weeks. Looks sweet!

Thanks Christo! I am sitting here waiting on the sheetrockers now, like I need more dust in here!

So, you're 8 months in... have pics? I am now about 3 weeks in and I grow weary of the disaster style mess my home is experiencing. I have the HT/Media Room project on one end of the house and a new master bedroom/bath/closet project on the other end... I have no where to hide!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll be glad when it's all over.
