Why I won't be buying Here's Lucy (1 Viewer)

The show, although it had a good run, was not that good. Lucille Ball was just going through the motions at that point as she had basically been doing the same gags for over 20 years. But, had they put together a package of non-guest star episodes, the ones that actually resembled a sitcom, I might have picked it up. The big guest star episodes were closer to skits on a variety show than to characters on a sitcom. Any pretense of character was lost in these episodes. Besides, The Lucy Show, especially the first 3 seasons with Vivian Vance were just so much better anyway.

Yeah, Mrs. Carmichael was a cooler character than Mrs. Carter.

I kind of understand what you're saying about the eps with guest stars vs. those without.

Shout wanted to go with a release featuring almost all (or perhaps it was "all" that they wanted) episodes featuring guest stars, because it would represent a theme they could advertise and, in their minds, sell better because of the added star power.

Stuart Shostak, Lucille Ball's longtime video collaborator, tried hard to convince both Shout and the DVD's producers, Paul Brownstein and his production company, to focus on the family episodes rather than the guest-star schtick, and because of that effort they went with a mix of 25% episodes that are non-guest-stars. So thank Stuart for his effort to get six out of twenty-four episodes that - as Stuart puts it - have "a beginning, a middle, and an end".

I don't think that this will significantly affect whether or not I buy this release. It will be buyer feedback about which ones they prefer that help form the shape of future releases. So let them know what you prefer, 'kay?

I wont be getting this show.

It's not that I have anything against it or some vendetta or anything. I just didnt really like it. I also was never able to make it through an entire episode without either laughing (for the wrong reasons) or shivering in fright.

I never did see most episodes because the show just never really held my interest the way I Love Lucy and the early seasons (The B&W and Vivian Vance years) of The Lucy Show did.

It's sort of like The Golden Girls Vs. The Golden Palace to me.

I loved The Golden Girls. I didnt much care for the last season, but I was still able to make it all the way through.

I just didnt care for The Golden Palace at all. I wasnt able to finish out the season.

There are plenty of shows I dislike too, but I don't understand the need to create a thread about how a show was awful.

Everyone has different tastes, everyone isn't always going to like every show.

Personally, while I liked Lucy, Vivian, and Mr. Mooney, I particularly didn't care for the rest of the cast so I don't mind the guest star episodes as much as especially in the case of Jack Benny, George Burns, Phil Silvers, and Carol Burnett.

It has the feel that the old Jack Benny Show use to have.

I won't be getting this DVD though because the episode I want the most isn't on it. I really want the episode where Lucy visits Jack Benny's vault. It is the one episode I remember clearly till this day.

I was excited about this release until I heard it was mostly guest star episodes. Is this a release for Lucy's fans or everyoneelseintheworld's fans? Also, The Lucy Show needs release in season sets. It's sad how poorly Lucille's work has been preserved on DVD.

I may be wrong, but I think that's an episode of The Lucy Show. Unless there is indeed an episode of Here's Lucy involving Jack Benny's vault. If we're thinking of the same episode, it is available on several cheapie public domain episode DVDs.

Yes, the Benny show with the vault is from "The Lucy Show", not "Here's Lucy." It's a great episode actually that even has a funny setup when Mr. Mooney decides the bank's new slogan will be "You Can Bank On Us!" but when he's about to give that to Mr. Cheever the president, he is told to the effect that he wants to hear something original and not a corny slogan like "You Can Bank On Us!". Mooney's attempts to think of something new on the spur of the moment is one of the funniest things I ever saw.

Does anybody have any idea why they're not releasing The Lucy Show on DVD?

I will definitely be picking this one up, just to be able to see the show again. "Here's Lucy" used to be on a local station every day when I was a kid and I remember certain episodes pretty well.

As far as the 75% celeb shows 25% family, plot-driven shows...that was pretty much the equation used during the series run. It's obvious that a set filled with celeb episodes will draw Lawrence Welk completists, Burton-Taylor afficianados and Jack Benny fans..but that's the exact reason they were booked on "Here's Lucy" in the first place--to attract interest in a series that really isn't very good.

The only non-celeb "Here's Lucy"s that interest me are the ones filmed on location..I seem to remember an episode done entirely on location at LAX...

As a fan of Lucille Ball, I'll be picking this one up...especially since I've never seen Here's Lucy before.

But...where are my Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, and The Lucy Show season sets? How about the even-more-obscure Life With Lucy?

LIFE WITH LUCY!? UGH! Simply horrible, and the unaired shows are even worse.

I will buy the HERE'S LUCY set. The series wasn't great, but the shows they picked are decent. I would have much rather purchased a first season set however. The series got much worse in the last half of the run.

I'd love to see THE LUCY SHOW given a proper release, especially the first couple of seasons which were quite good.

The Lucy Desi Comedy hour is basically a continuation of I Love Lucy.

I doubt this would be released before the remaining seasons of I Love Lucy are.

I will be getting this because Lucy is great, and the episode featuring my all time favourite, Elizabeth Taylor is included! It's a no brainer for me.
