The show, although it had a good run, was not that good. Lucille Ball was just going through the motions at that point as she had basically been doing the same gags for over 20 years. But, had they put together a package of non-guest star episodes, the ones that actually resembled a sitcom, I might have picked it up. The big guest star episodes were closer to skits on a variety show than to characters on a sitcom. Any pretense of character was lost in these episodes. Besides, The Lucy Show, especially the first 3 seasons with Vivian Vance were just so much better anyway.
