Looks like more of the same, which is good and bad IMO. Loved the first two, but it'll soon be time for the series to evolve.

Different scenario, different city, but the same general idea from what I gather. I can't wait!

Official site with 3 screenshots.

Here is a synopsis and commentary from GameSpot:

Early this morning, Rockstar released the first plot summary of GTA: SA, which confirmed its early 1990s millieu. Here it is verbatim:

"Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers.

Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.

On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets."

All the information released by Rockstar indicates that the controversial Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has not lost the rough-and-ready nature of its predecessors. GameSpot will have more details on this highly anticipated title--which is due in Q4 2004--as they become available.

Well, I think all this info confirms that San Andreas will be more L.A. and not San Fran. Too bad. I was really looking forward to some wicked car chases on those hills.

This series really needs to go online to ever evolve. I'll leave it to everyone's imaginations as to how cool THAT would be.
If the way is clear, go forward...

There's a post at http://www.gta-sanandreas.com that quotes an PSMUK article with a lot of new and pretty awesome stuff that's going to be in this game. If even half of this stuff makes it in, I'm still going to be eagerly awaiting the pre-order date. Check it out:
Quote:
Following yesterday's speculatory story based on the release of the first three GTA San Andreas sceenshots a new raft of information has arrived courtesy of Rockstar Games that give first solid details of the title.

First up - the locations. It's emerged that San Andreas doesn't refer to a city but an entire fictional West Coast state. This is made up of three separate areas: San Fierro (San Francisco), Las Venturra (Las Vegas) and Los Santos (Los Angeles). If you're already thinking 'big' then double it and add a few noughts. It's been claimed that each of the three cities is linked by areas as large as the entire Vice City map. Yes, it's up to six times bigger! Have a little think about that.

Second, the main character has been named as Carl Johnson. He returns to his home state after serving five years in the Liberty City slammer. His mother has been killed, his family is falling apart and his childhood friends are going off the rails. Our hero is framed for murder by a couple of bent cops sending him on a journey across the whole of San Andreas as a wanted fugitive. You like?

If that's not enough we've also heard that game will incorporate a stamina meter (you'll have to eat to stay fit) and dramatically improved building interiors. Improved interiors are something many fans have demanded since GTA3 and OPS2 is hugely excited at the prospect of an even more expansive game environment. Especially when it means we can visit Las Venturra casinos and spend all our dirty money on craps and blackjack. Or maybe commit the odd burglary to pass the time...

Oh, we nearly forgot, that screenshot of the dudes in the drive-by shooting? Apparently advanced character AI means CJ can recruit gangs and use them to help him in missions. Four guns are better than one, after all.
An entire state to play in, B&E, gang recruitement and drive-bys, oh my! The Moral Minority is going to go into shock over this one, but screw 'em. This is going to be good. I just wonder how they plan to do this on the PS2 (Sony still has first release rights, don't they). I might have to hold off until the X-Box or PC version comes out if it looks like it's too much for Sony to handle.

Looks fun, but I will be passing.

I am just kind of worn out on this series after Vice City.

Check out the new Game Informer mag, ten pages of GTA goodness. They really are doing a lot of things with this new installment. Nothing overwhelmingly huge, but it should add up. I'm interested. Vice City was a letdown. I liked the missions a lot, as much as GTAIII. But it just wasn't as fun to drive around or killing people as in GTAIII. LoL. I think I'll have fun driving around in this new one after reading the GI mag.
