Is Canada foreign enuff for ya?*
I'm waiting with much anticipation for the newly-released, special edition DVDs of Careful and Tales from the Gimli Hospital by Canadian surrealist, Guy Maddin. Although these titles streeted last week, my order is presently on 'backorder' status at 800.com of all places.
The DVD of Careful includes a 60 minute documentary on Guy Maddin's films, Waiting for Twilight, and a commentary by Guy Maddin and George Toles. The DVD of Tales from the Gimli Hospital includes another Guy Maddin commentary plus a short film, The Dead Father (25 mins) and Hospital Fragment (4 mins), which appears to be an outtake from Gimli.
If you're a fan of Svankmajer, the Brothers Quay, Lynch, Jodorowsky, and the like, check these out. Some more info:

*Since this is an international forum, maybe 'arthouse' should replace 'foreign' in the header? By the way, I think this list is a great idea. These titles generally don't debut with quite the same fanfare that accompanies the mainstream titles, and so it's nice to get a heads-up on 'em!

Hmm...good point. I've always carried it over as "foreign film", but art house (or art house/international) works for me too.
Incidentally, intriguing visuals for Careful. I'll have to take a closer look at that website.

For what it's worth, a no-frills version of Les Enfants du Paradis is due out shortly in R2. Also the BBFC-approved version of L'Histoire d'O is due to be released in the UK on October 25th.

To paraphrase Bresson "art" movies (those shown in "art" houses) are most devoid of it. If "foreign" where do we draw the line? Before the incessant hordes of anime, Bollywood and Hong Kong movies on DVD? If "international" aren't U.S. movies international, too? Sorry for being pedantic. How about "Cinema for Snobs?"

Gems like most of these deserve to get real
attention, too. Most of these of course, are not rootin tootin HT setup showoff pieces ala JP, etc.....and certainly wont cause your LFE to kick in, but are well worth investigating anyway. I dont mind the vacuous eyecandy/babysitting mode of much of todays 'entertainment', and have much of that in my collection, but its nice to have these to view when you need some REAL food for a change
When Columbia, will you put out TESS?

Guy Maddin is the George Lucas of the Winnipeg film scene. Nice (and a tad strange) to see him getting some international recognition.

Pascal, what about "Princess Mononoke", which I believe is now supposed to street on 12/1. I can't wait to see this one on DVD!

Are Kwaidan and Aguirre: Wrath of God any good? I've wanted to see both, but don't want to deal with spoilers. Are both worth the money?

Idiocy is a fashion that I wear well.

I'm not a huge Herzog fan (I much prefer his New German Cinema contemporary, Fassbinder), but Aguirre is one of my favorites of his. Think Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness type stuff.
I'll leave Kwaidan for someone else... I find it gorgeous, but a tad empty.
Has anyone gotten a copy of The Idiots? Transfer quality? Does it have the big black bars blocking out the nasty bits?

I'm looking for info on a DVD Release of the swedish movie F*cking Amal, renamed Show Me Love in the US I believe.
The original title might scare some people, but don't be fooled. It's a beautiful, brilliant movie. I just saw this swedish film, which has won many, many awards the last 2 years (very well deserved) and I was just wondering if it has been released on DVD anywhere in the world. I suppose it is out in Sweden, but I do need english subs. I'm afraid I don't understand Swedish that good yet
If you haven't seen this film yet..please do. It's a very different..no wait, it's a REALISTIC look at 2 young teenage girls falling in love.. Not the usual happy-happy-joy-joy world as Hollywood wants everyone to believe it is. Take a look at the comments on the IMDB. It's not the #200 movie of all time for nothing.

The movie is released in r4 by Columbia/Tristar I think.

Show Me Love & Anatomie have not been announced yet. Anatomie had an extremely limited theatrical release (it was in Atlanta in 1 theater for 1 week) and Show Me Love is still on the festival circuit I believe, so a DVD release is anybody's guess. I'm still waiting for a region 1 release of Open Your Eyes
Ike, I am a big Herzog fan and would highly recommend Aguirre. Al's comparison's to Apocalypse are pretty accurate. I like to say that if you took Apocalypse but put Col. Kurtz on the boat, you would have Aguirre. I think Herzog is one of the true visionaries of cinema (of course, whether or not he had the budget or skill to always meet that vision is debatable), but this film contains some truly unforgettable images and the Herzog/Kinski collaboration produces some great acting.
