See? That's how promising releasing TV Shows onto DVD is... you can have the worst tv show released.

What a dim-bulb comment (and thread fart, to boot). "Roseanne" is not on my Top 25 list for TV shows I'd like to see on DVD, but it was a good show, sought out to give us a cast that very well could have been a typical American family, and always provides me with a genuine belly laugh or two each time I catch a re-run on TV.

I still have not seen the series finale, which I hear is quite shocking.

Darlene and David bring home their new baby. Roseanne's sage advice for her daughter? "The best part is when you can mold their tender little egos to fit your every whim," she says. But the baby's not the only news. When friends and family gather to celebrate the birth, Becky and Mark have a surprising secret -- and Leon and Scott make an announcement.

In this emotional finale, Roseanne and Darlene reveal to each other that both want the other to stay at the Connor house. As the whole family sits down to eat, Roseanne drifts away, turning up in her writing room, finishing her book, where she revelas the truth. The lifes we have seen are actually the lifes of the people in her book ... not real life. In real life, she is still coping with the fact that Dan died, Becky married David, and Darlene married Mark. In the end, she reveals that the whole life the audience has known, has really been a narration of her book, and the way she wants life to be.

Perhaps there's a slight chance that if Disney's new animated movie Home on the Range is a big success that it will prompt a DVD release of her TV show timed to coincide with the release of the film on DVD? There's no telling how Home on the Range will do, but its success is something to watch.

This show was in the Nielson Top 3 for 5 years in the ratings... It also won 4 Emmy's and 3 Golden Globe awards... Somebody liked it...

It would definately warrant a release... Actually, the funny thing is if you go by ratings, this show would warrant a release more than 90% of the shows that do get a release...

The reason they are not releasing the show along with the Cosby Show is because they are afraid it will hurt syndication... Both shows do well in syndication...

It's the same reason The Golden Girls has not been released... It's the number #1 sitcom in syndication... Yes, it even has beaten out The Simpsons and Friends in syndication... I was very surprised...

Hi, guys. Long time no write, though I *HAVE* been lurking from time to time.

This was one of those times, and the post that started this thread - and the subsequent direction this thread has taken! - prompted me to come out of hiding for just a minute here.

Greg quoted my story, but in fact the writing he attributes to TVShowsOnDVD (and therefore me) is, in entirety, stuff that came out of the Video Store Magazine article that was the basis for my article. Nothing Greg quoted was written up by me. 100% of the credit for that goes to Fred Topel of VSM.

When I read the VSM article, I was interested to know that Gord and I seemed to know more about the situation than VSM, or indeed Roseanne herself, did. The lack of DVDs, you see, doesn't seem to be centered around the show itself, how much money it makes in syndication, or anything else along those lines that VSM talked about. And CWM told us that some time ago, but seemed not to choose to share that info now. An oversight? A spokesman who just didn't know what the situation was? Perhaps. Or perhaps just trying not to talk even a little bit about something that they can't talk a whole lot about yet, so they decided not to even go there.

Greg, no hard feeling here. I appreciate that you thought so much of my story to talk about it here, and I don't think you *intended* to change my meaning about it. I just don't want to take credit for what Fred wrote, nor do I want to go un-relayed what I consider to be vital information that neither Fred nor Roseanne seemed to have, and which Carsey-Werner shared with us a while back but somehow it got left out of this article.


Well, time to go back into lurk mode and actually get back to work at my full-time job. Things are still very hectic here, and my stress levels aren't much better than they were. I guess thati's why I'm playing hookey for a few minutes to read the latest at HTF. :wink:

David, good to read your words again. I won't give you the credit for the article, but thanks for posting it. Anyway, it would be really nice to have these shows on DVD, and I would think that some studios would be falling over themselves to get those properties mentioned.

What might CW do? Might they give up distribution rights for all their shows to 1 studio or try to negotiate deals for each show, so where you might have 1 studio end up with Cosby Show and another Rosann? Who knows, but they do have an advantage in that they probably have reliable information to suggest that some of these shows would do big business on DVD and they want as much of that business as they can get.

I've been wondering and waiting for Roseanne DVDs for awhile now... I suspected that they were milking the syndication for all it's worth, and *that* was causing a delay. I dunno... I'd just like to have first 4 or so seasons on DVD.. hopefully with commentary from Sara Gilbert. (not really interested in the stories Roseanne wants to tell in audio commentaries, since I don't really consider her the most truthful person )

I've never seen the series finale... from the post above, it sounds really... dumb. Not so much "shocking" ... more like an annoying cop-out. I hate that whole "it was all just a dream (or a fantasy/work of fiction)" gimmick. It seems like a slap in the face to faithful viewers who've been following the story for years. Turns out they shouldn't have got invested, 'cause that wasn't the *real* story after all! Yay.

Well, I wish the last season was a dream for me too because I can't believe how bad it was. The first season was soso. As for the seasons in between: I absolutely love them! If they ever start releasing season sets I'll definitely buy them (even the last one for completion's sake).

I thought the last episode was interesting, and for some reason the whole "it was a dream/fantasy" never makes me feel cheated, just kind of intrigued. It's not like the shows don't exist.

Basically, they've just to realize how much of a gold-mine they're sitting on with these... They can be turning huge profits. I think as TV on DVD continues to grow, they'll realize that even the lowest shows can turn a profit...

Roseanne is one of my favorite shows to this day. I almost never skip the re-runs on UPN here in Chicago, and I can see why it's high up in syndication. It's got great repeat value, and the writing is top-notch, for most of the years.

The last season was an abomination with some of the worst storylines ever created... Roseanne as Rambo, etc... It was just way too stupid... The season should just not exist...

The whole dream thing IMO was one of the worst ways they can end a show... People dont watch a show for 9 years to hear that it's a dream... Cop Out is what I call it...

From what I've heard, CWM is planning on licensing out their entire catalog to one company, which is why this is taking so long. Had they wanted to do one show at a time then they could have been licensing shows for the past few years. Whoever gets this deal is going to be very happy.

Thanks Gord, I sort of figured that this was the way they were doing it, because if it were on a show by show basis like you said some of this would've been done by now. The studio that ends up with those rights is going to be very happy indeed.

Yes, it would Michael. This will end up going to a smaller studio (not Disney, Warner, Fox, Columbia, Universal...) so if a show is started we'll probably see it finished.

The smaller studios have far fewer failures on DVD, because they're happy making SOME money off the title. The only thing I can think of that A&E hasn't continued with (this is off the top of my head) is Peter Gunn. Everything else has received multiple seasons (or sets), and they've completed releases for many shows. Anchor Bay keeps Xena, Hercules and Highlander coming; Crime Story season 2 is coming later this year; there's more Three's Company as well. Rhino is doing a nice job with getting Transformers out, along with the Krofft shows.

It's the little guy that cares about each and every set, and they're more likely to finish a series. When possible, make sure you support these companies, because they're supporting you.

Thanks Gord. That's really cool and i'm all for that that I could even wait a while. Does this mean they might release their whole catalog like Roseanne, Cosby, Diffrent World, Grace Under Fire, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Oh Madeline, That 70s Show, That 80s Show, Grounded For Life. Because that would be awesome.

ANY CWM show would be examined by the company that gets it.
