OK, this tournament will be (at the same time) for the best remake and worst remake of all time. I realize there's disagreement about what constitutes a remake, and such discussion is welcome. Everyone will have unlimited noms and seconds, and in most cases I will let it stand when two people think it's a remake, but I reserve the right to drop any that I don't think qualify. It's hard to put into words, but I'd like the remake to be intended as such. For example, The Magnificent Seven is very different in some ways than Seven Samurai, but it was clearly intended to be a remake of that film. On the other hand, it's highly doubtful that Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet was intended to be a remake of West Side Story. I realize it's fuzzy, but hopefully it'll make sense.

I've stuck in 41 remakes, which leaves 23 slots open.

In:

an affair to remember (love affair)
ben-hur 1959 (ben-hur 1925)
the birdcage (la cage aux folles)

Make sure when you nominate a remake that you indicate which film it is a remake of. However, you don't need to say whether you consider this one of the best remakes or one of the worst remakes, that'll all sort itself out automatically once the tournament begins.

Yikes, I assume that you need to have seen both to be able to tell whether it was a good or bad remake? Well, I've seen exactly 4 of these pairings. So I don't know if I should nominate anything or not since I will rarely be able to participate.

No, you don't need to have seen the original, just the remake. I guess I wasn't too clear, but the idea is best film (that happens to be a remake) and worst film (that happens to be a remake).

Well, I've only seen 10 of the 41, so not a whole lot better.

But I'll nominate:

Ali: Fear Eats The Soul (All That Heaven Allows)
His Girl Friday (The Front Page)
Nosferatu: The Vampyre (Nosferatu: A Symphony Of Horror)
Night Of The Living Dead 1990 (Night Of The Living Dead '69)
The Good Thief (Bob Le Flambeur)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003)
Dial M for Murder (A Perfect Murder 1998)
The Thing 1982 (The Thing from Another World 1951)

Nick,

A Perfect Murder is already in.

Brook,

Having seen both Fear Eats the Soul and All That Heaven Allows, it had never occured to me that it was a remake, but in retrospect, I can certainly see the similarities.

Nominated (needs a second):

Ali: Fear Eats The Soul (All That Heaven Allows)
His Girl Friday (The Front Page)
Nosferatu: The Vampyre (Nosferatu: A Symphony Of Horror)
Night Of The Living Dead 1990 (Night Of The Living Dead 1969)
The Good Thief (Bob Le Flambeur)
King Kong 1976 (King Kong 1933)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974)
The Thing 1982 (The Thing from Another World 1951)

I nominate:

The Ten Commandments (1956) (Ten Commandments - silent)
A Star is Born (1954) (A Star is Born - 1937)
The Thin Red Line - (The Thin Red Line - 1964)
Cape Fear (1991) - (Cape Fear - 1962)
Far From Heaven - All That Heaven Allows

I'm confused about the bad remakes, are you going to have 2 separate tournaments? There are so many bad remakes, you should make it 128 films. Here are just a few:

Psycho - same name
Mighty Joe Young - same
Invaders From Mars - same
Truth About Charlie - (Charade)
Point of No Return - (La Femme Nikita)
The Getaway - same
The Desperate Hours - same
The Haunting - same
The Bride - Bride of Frankenstein
Village of the Damned - same
Stagecoach (1966) - same

I second:

The Thing
His Girl Friday
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul

I'll second Solaris, Insomnia and Ocean's Eleven

Planet of the Apes isn't a remake, Burton likes to say its a re-imagining. :)

I nominate:

Vanilla Sky (Abre Los Ojos)

OK,

I was trying to do something a bit different, so my thought was in the first round you'd vote for the best film. The winners would then continue on in 'vote for the best' brackets, while the losers would continue on simultaneously in 'vote for the worst' bracket. So each time (after the first round), you'd have one matchup where you'd choose the best and one matchup where you choose the worse.

I realize this is different that separate best and worst tourneys, but I thought it might be a bit more interesting.

So, I'm hoping that people are nominating both remakes they like and ones they don't.

I've ruled out A Bug's Life, because while it (and many other films) has definite story elements from Seven Samurai), it's really the story of Flik, and not a remake.

There are 10 slots remaining and the following have been nominated and not yet seconded:

Night Of The Living Dead 1990 (Night Of The Living Dead 1969)
King Kong 1976 (King Kong 1933)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974)
Mighty Joe Young 1998 (Mighty Joe Young 1949)
Invaders From Mars 1986 (Invaders from Mars 1953)
Truth About Charlie (Charade)
Point of No Return (La Femme Nikita)
The Getaway 1994 (The Getaway 1972)
The Desperate Hours 1990 (The Desparate Hours 1955)
The Haunting 1999 (The Haunting 1963)
The Bride - Bride of Frankenstein
Village of the Damned 1995 (Village of the Damned 1960)
Stagecoach 1966 (Stagecoach 1939)
The Vanishing 1993 (The Vanishing 1988)
Sorcerer (Wages of Fear)
Vanilla Sky (Abre Los Ojos)
The Ring 2002 (Ring 1998)
