Where are the mysteries? (1 Viewer)

With many dramas, old and new, being released, I have to ask, where are the mysteries?

I'm talking shows like:
Matlock
Murder, She Wrote
The Cosby Mysteries
Columbo
Diagnosis Murder
Quincy M.E.

I am a fan of all of these shows and wouldn't mind owning some season sets of them! Any news/rumors/rumblings regarding any of these shows?

While I'm not a fan of any of these shows I sure hope they come on DVD. And I'm sure some of them will. But when is the big question.

I'd certainly buy Columbo. They came out on vhs, so hopefully someday they'll make their way to dvd.

It could be that a number of those shows skew older in their audiences. It seems to me that a lot of the shows that have come out have been ones that appeal to younger people (Buffy, The Simpsons, X-Files, etc.). But there have a greater diversity of shows coming out lately, so who knows? Columbo would seem like a good bet for the future.
The odd thing is that if those shows had been British, in spite of the larger audiences in the States for the ones you mentioned, they would likely be out by now. A lot of British mystery series have been released in the States.

One factor that may have held up some of these are that they consist of hour long episodes with the occasional two hour movie thrown in. With some notable exceptions, it seems that the majority of "TV on DVD" product are half hour shows. (This has been changing recently so this isn't as true as it once was.)

The longer running time would mean more discs to hold one season (unless DVD-18 is used) which increases the price and reduces sales.

Studios may be hesitant to invest in a product that, as Amy said, are preceived to skew older.

I certainly hope these start coming out, because some of my most wanted TV shows fall in this category (Matlock, Perry Mason, Diagnosis Murder, Ironside, etc.)

I don't think so. THe pioneering shows in this field were the hour-long X-Files and Star Trek. Granted, there haven't been all that many hour-long catalog shows, but just from my collection, there's 24, Alias, Angel, Babylon 5, Band of Brothers, Beastmaster, Buffy, Charlie's Angels, Dark Angel, Dawson's Creek, The Dead Zone, Felicity, Firefly, Forever Knight, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The Incredible Hulk, Law & Order, NYPD Blue, Oz, The Shield, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Twin Peaks, The X-Files and Xena. So there isn't too much resistance to the idea.
