It seems that studios are pushing the envelope more and more until now we are starting to see down and out "sex" on the screen. Take for example the new movie The Dreamers that 20th Fox decided to show "as is" without making it an R rated feature. Or the movie Intimacy which is out on DVD and apparently Universal distributed in Europe? that shows straight forward sex acts in progress.

I am not sure if either are ground breaking but can anyone else come up with other mainstream movies, possibly earlier, that broke the mold that shows people doing the nasty including all of their private parts? ;) Again I emphasize mainstream (straight or gay) and not porn movies.

I remember one or two such scenes from Gorky Park. Although, I don't think we really saw much of William Hurt, that I can remember. :)

Good-old CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), more than ten years ago when they weren't scared of showing nudity...

I don't know if you care, but this description doesn't apply to The Dreamers. There's a lot of full-frontal nudity, but the sex scenes aren't really more explicit than what you might find in Body Heat (1981) or Last Tango in Paris (1972).

Moving this to Movies.

Doubt we will be seeing The Brown Bunny anytime soon. Seems they are looking for an outlet to distribute but judging from reporter Peter Brunette of IndieWire who saw the screening....

Didnt this one french movie, called ROMANCE I believe, actually show in the unrated version the woman going down on one of the male characters? I remember reading about it, but have yet to see the film itself.

Lars von Trier's Idioterne (1998). The actual sequences are performed by "stunt doubles" (a.k.a. porn stars). Haven't seen the whole film, I just caught the first 20 minutes or so on TV.

I seem to recall IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES (1976) having actual sexual acts in it. It's available on DVD.

I also remember reading about some British movie where, I think, Alan Bates got an on-screen skin flute recital from either Glenda Jackson or Vanessa Redgrave or someone like that. Never saw it, just remember being rather surprised that any mainstream actress would feel the need to perform oral in such a public way.

When I saw Kerry Fox give a little attention to Mark Rylance's meat whistle in INTIMACY (which is a pretty good film), I kinda figured all bets were off these days, and wondered who might break this cinematic taboo next...

If you're asking about DVDs, why is one of your two main examples The Dreamers, which is still in theaters and hasn't even been announced for DVD?

In any case, this thread is about content, and like we say in the Software forum description, "threads that focus primarily on content will be relocated to a more appropriate forum (e.g., 'Movies')".

I'll fix the title, though.

Wasn't there a stink about Wild Orchid, the "sequel" to 9 1/2 Weeks, with regards to Rourke and the main actress supposedly really having intercourse onscreen?

Romance does indeed show the the lead actress getting down, although if your looking for erotic kicks, you best look elsewhere.

also, isn't "The Piano Teacher" supposed to be expicit? I've never seen it.

Mainstream films of the current era pale when compared with the sexual daring of the 1970s. Violence is what most commercial-theater goers seem to prefer today.

that is a shame but since we are on the topic:

what more daring films (considered fairly mainstream) are on DVD? and are actually watchable as films not just to see the skin. (If I want porn I got the net:D)

Ugh. That film is evil. Definitely explicit, but not in a good way. Not for me anyway.

Wasn't this produced by Penthouse? So was it really mainstream, or a porn film that managed to get some mainstream stars to play roles that didn't require full-on sex? For that matter, just how explicit was this?

I realize rape is forced sex, but I don't think it belongs here.
