Any chance of Columbia House offering a complete DVD collection similair to the VHS sets they offered a few years ago? I would love to own this show on DVD along with the holiday specials, etc.

Any ideas?

I'm also wondering if we will ever see Pee Wee's Playhouse on DVD. Now that Paul Ruebens has pled guilty to obscenity charges I am doubtful we will ever see it.

I'd get this in a heart beat. Pee Wee's troubles aside, this was a hoot of a show!

I wouldn't think twice before picking up sets of this show. Watching this was definitely one of my Saturday morning highlights. I loved the Christmas special as well. I think what made Pee-Wee's Playhouse so great was that it was completely different than anything else on television. Not to mention being one of the most energetic programs on Saturday morning TV at the time. It had everything, from cartoons, short films, claymation, the 'word of the day', and a huge cast of wacky characters (including Kap'n Karl - portrayed by the late, great Phil Hartman). This show had all of the elements to keep kids entertained......elements which are seldom seen today.

So that being said, I'd definitely be the first to pick sets of this up....for two reasons. First, it would be wonderful to relive some childhood memories by watching these episodes again, and secondly, my little girl will get to see what was great about Saturday mornings back in the day.

Well, Paul Reubens says he's planning a third Pee-Wee film, so it'd be smart for this to coincide with a complete set of Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

Of course, with the obscenity charges, there may not be a third film.

I'm still surprised Big Top Pee-Wee has yet to be released on DVD.

Big Top Pee-Wee was announced as a Paramount title in June I believe.

Aren't these alleged charges against him long passed? I don't see how or why that should affect home video production of a hugely successful and widely appreciated televisio show?

I can think of at least a dozen people in hollywood who've done far more menacing things than pulling their weiners out in some sleaze porn theatre...

I think they were referring to the more recent "child pornography" accusations, and after seeing recent news stories on the charges, they also seemed to be much ado about nothing in my opinion.

I remember an HBO special Pee-Wee did which was hilarious. I think it was called the Pee-Wee Herman Show. It was kind of like Pee-Wee's Playhouse, but definitely aimed at adults. I wonder if that will ever be released.

I would love to see Pee Wee's Playhouse on DVD in season format. I don't care that Pee Wee (Paul Ruebens) was arrested around 1991.

I grew up on Pee Wee's Playhouse. I was 9 yrs. old when this show first aired in 1986. I also love the Pee Wee's Big Adventure movie (I own this on DVD).

I hate to do this but I have to point out that every person in this thread has gotten the name wrong. As Paul Ruebens points out on the commentary track of "Big Adventure", it's spelled "Pee-wee", with a hyphen and a lower-case "w". Anyways, I would love "Pee-wee's Playhouse" on DVD and I'll probably even buy "Big Top Pee-wee" even though it's terrible. EDIT: maybe Shout! Factory has the balls to release "Pee-wee's Playhouse".

Does Columbia own exclusive rights to distribution right now?

I'm watching the rainy day episode downloaded from mIRC and I am just realizing how brilliant this show really was, it NEEDS to be released to DVD in season sets!!

Someone whould write or pertition Columbia and let them know the consumer demand for this!

Yeah, MGM released a bunch of episodes on VHS. I assume they'd be the ones to petition for a DVD. Too bad Warner Bros. and Paramount don't own it. They're obviously OK with releasing their Pee-wee movies.

Carlos - that HBO special is genius. I love the kids show, but this thing was the best. It use to be on VHS, but that's long oop, and I really doubt HBO home video will ever do a DVD, especially after these new charges. You can still catch it on HBO every now and then. Keep a look out.

I doubt it's high on HBO's list of priorities but I don't think they would decline to release it based on Paul Reubens's infamy. This is the network that airs "The Sopranos" and "Six Feet Under". They're also a Warner Bros. subsidiary and WB didn't have a problem releasing "Pee-wee's Big Adventure".

The HBO special was priceless. I used to own the VHS. If this were ever to see the light of day on DVD, I'd be among the first to grab it. It was hilarious on so many levels. For example, when Kap'n Karl shows Pee-Wee a drawing of a mermaid.....

KARL: "There are two things missing from this picture, Pee-Wee."
PEE-WEE: "Are they round?"
KARL: "Sometimes."

(brief pause)

PEE-WEE: "I know, I know.........earrings!"
KARL: "No Pee-Wee..............a bellybutton and a watch."

LOL, this is classic hilarity at its best.

Holy s*@t!

Is this site a reliable source??

They also indicate that a Frighteners Special Edition is due out in November!

Thanks for pointing that out, Brandon; I had overlooked it. I'll use it in a news item, but I'll mention here the same caution I will there: Mondo's got dates for other items from Image that I am told by inside sources are not set in stone. There's not reason to believe that the Pee-Wee date is completely firm, either. But at least it's a heads-up that it is being looked at.

I realize its not 100% confirmed that it is being released, but still, this is very cool. Pee-wee's Playhouse is listed as one of the top 25 cult tv shows ever in the latest issue of TV Guide, and the P-W blurb mentions that fans are waiting for DVDs, myself included. I wonder if these Vol 1/2 releases are single discs, or multiple like Family Guy? I'm hoping its the latter, as I generally hate single-disc releases for TV, but for this show, I'd buy it. As a completest, I'd like to eventually own the whole series, tho...

I'd love to see The Pee-wee Herman Show on DVD! That was a hilarious stage show from the early 80s, and the VHS is OOP. :frowning: I saw it on Comedy Central a few years ago, but never got a chance to record it.

BTW, I'm pretty sure Big-Top Pee-wee is being released on DVD July 6.
