20th Century Fox's 'Studio Classics' DVD Series (1 Viewer)

Some of you may have seen my thread, 'Warner Brother's 2-Disc Special Edition Series' in which I highly praise Warner Bros. for their fantastic restoration and presentation of their 2-Disc (Slip Cover) Series. Well after now collecting Fox's entire (SE) 'Studio Classics' series I am happy to report that Warner Bros. is not the only studio in town that is taking great care in restoring beloved classics!

Fox began this series just over a year ago and since then have been releasing one new title on the first Tuesday of every month.

If you missed it, on January 12 Peter Staddon (Senior VP of Marketing for Fox Home Entertainment) participated in an HTF chat and spent close to three hours in a Q&A session with HTF members. (click here for a transcript of that chat). It was an excellent evening full of insights and news on upcoming Fox DVD releases.

i'm finally taking the time to get caught up with 2003 titles, and the past few days i finally got around to watching The Ghost & Mrs.Muir and Ox-Bow Incident.
Boy, do these films still satisfy!
i still adore Ghost and was very pleasantly surprised by how much more moving i found Ox-Bow this viewing.
i originally saw it in my early 20s and while i respected it, it didn't really pack the same punch it did this time around.
what a fine, fine film.

i also didn't realize that G&MM was a Joe Mankiewicz production.
my big hope for a future Studio Classic is A Letter To Three Wives another witty Joe L. M. film.
after falling in love all over again with Tiereny in G&MM, i can't wait for Laura and LHTH.
i've never seen the latter before so i'm really looking forward to that one.

Nils… Great thread as I’m also a huge fan of the Studio Classics.

I’m hoping (and assuming) that perhaps the reason for the delay in Laura is for an upcoming line of film noir titles – God only knows they have enough of them in their library to keep us satisfied for awhile. And I’d buy every single one of them…!!!

Sunrise is not out of print as it can be found in the Studio Classics Boxset along with How Green Was My Valley, Gentleman's Agreement, and All About Eve.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". I'd take that over "Peyton Place" any day. I'd also be glad to see Nightmare Alley".

My #1 most wanted from Fox is Nicholas Ray's Bigger Than Life, but the chat said it wasn't being considered.

I wish Marilyn Monroe were in some of those Film Noir's that Fox has buried away in their vaults, they would all be out on DVD by now.

If "Pickup on South Street" doesn't sell for Criterion than the film noir genre will continue to be ignored by Fox as well as the other studios. I know I have my copy on preorder, but I wonder about others here that are screaming for these film noir titles?

I have Pickup on South Street pre-ordered and I bet almost every other Film Noir fan here at HTF has it pre-ordered too. If they don't, they should be taken to a dark alley and have Robert Ryan slap them around till they do.

There is no need for you to take my comment/"screaming" in the literal sense of the word. Matter of fact, I don't think some of us scream enough for these titles if we really want them on this format. Fox will release any film on dvd that they feel will sell enough units.

During the HTF Chat with Peter Stadden of Fox Home Video Peter Fitzgerald asked:
His last statement though sums up the dilemma of why many great films are not rushed, or even sometimes ever released on to DVD (or any HV format for that matter) simply because there often is not enough of a market to justify the cost. This is especially true when a title needs a great deal of restoration work.

As a huge fan of Film Noir (especially those of the detective genre) I too hope Fox and other studios continue to work on ways to make it possible for future DVD releases of all these wonderful films. The fact that some of the studios are open to licensing agreements with companies like Criterion, hopefully this will mean many of these titles will get released in a more timely fashion.

At the end of the day though, if sales of film noir are not enough to turn a profit for either the studio or distributor then future Film Noir titles will be in jeopardy. :frowning:
