In the grid are two listings that include several different titles:

“Douglas Fairbanks titles” include six silent film titles being released this week by Kino International. They are all also included in a single box set (also listed in the grid). The individual films are: The Thief of Bagdad/The Mark of Zorro/The Three Musketeers/Robin Hood/The Black Pirate/and Don Q, The Son of Zorro.

“Warner Brothers Screen Legends” are six titles being released this week by Warner Home Video. The individual films are: Gaslight, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Grand Hotel, The Great Ziegfeld, Mrs. Miniver, and Mutiny on the Bounty.

Also, if anyone is still wondering about the availability of Ed Wood, Here is a thread at the HTF which discusses the mystery surrounding its last-minute delay. The disc is showing up in some Best Buy and Circuit City flyers around the country.

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed advertisements, the Sunday of the week of release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website or perhaps in their ads...but it COULD still be in-stores!

$_"LP" means the advertisement says "Low Price", and $_"HP" means the advertisement says "Hot Price". Use of either of these in the Roundup grid indicates that I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I only include the titles I feel like including (or the ones Dave tells me he's looking for ;o)). In fact, the titles are pretty much the ones I'm personally interested in, with few exceptions. I don't get paid for this, and I don't have time to devote to doing every DVD. Look, Dave has a lovely wife and a five-year-old son that he is spending time with. So, please don't complain. If there is a title not included in the Roundup that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone...like Dave does!

Note that Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii. Also note that I cannot include Wal-Mart prices in the standard Roundup: Wal-Mart sets prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is not a way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart location. When it comes to Wal-Mart prices mentioned at all, just remember that "Your Mileage May Vary".

--Amazon is still featuring free shipping on orders over $25. Restrictions apply.

--BE CAREFUL! Lost In Translation, Under The Tuscan Sun, The Fighting Temptations, and POTA: 35th Anniversary are available in both Widescreen and Fullscreen versions...get the correct ones.

--ALSO! My Boss’s Daughter is available in both “R” and “PG-13” versions. Get the one that’s correct for you.

--Best Buy, this week, is offering you $5 off when you buy BOTH Under the Tuscan Sun AND My Boss’s Daughter. That’s $30.98 for both/$15.49 apiece.

--Best Buy is also offering $5off when you buy BOTH Red Dwarf Series 3 AND Series 4 together. This comes to $54.98 for both/$27.49 each. That’s much less than the $69.99 they claim for the two series together at Bestbuy.com

--And, even though Best Buy is listing POTA (35th Anniversary Edition) for $19.99, they are including it in a 2 for $30 promotion along with other Fox two-disc SEs: Fight Club, X2, Die Hard, Sound of Music, Cast Away, The Abyss, Independence Day, Something About Mary, Alien and Aliens.

--K-Mart lists Secondhand Lions, My Boss’s Daughter, Under the Tuscan Sun and The Fighting Temptations all for $19.99

--Target says if you buy Secondhand Lions from them this week they will give you a free 6oz. can of Pringles chips (see movie for coupon).

--Circuit City is offering $3 off if you buy both the DVD of The Fighting Temptations (Low Price) and the Fighting Temptations soundtrack CD ($11.99).

Is it my imagination, but are the opening week "discount" prices creeping up on new releases? $20 seems to be the price point more frequently.

Thanks a bunch for your continued efforts on the Weekly Roundup Mike. It's a lot of work, and I for one certainly appreciate what you're doing. Lost in Translation, Planet of the Apes, and Under the Tuscan Sun for me this week.

I think you're right Ed. I've also noticed the price creep towards the $19.99 price point lately. In the not too distant past you could usually count on an average release day price of $14.99-$17.99 at BB and CC, unless it was deluxe edition or a Criterion title. It's a disturbing trend.

I cannot believe the sheer number of new releases for Feb 3. There are well over 100 titles I'm interested in renting; it's usually about 1 or 2 dozen at most. Fortunately, the number of titles set to be released for the rest of February is a lot lower.
Can anyone confirm if Feb 3 is the biggest release day ever?

Dana-

I agree. For the first time since well before Christmas, my picks outstrip my ability to pay for them! But, relating this to the point I made about creeping prices, there are some titles I can wait for. If I wait just a few months, the $20 title will likely be part of a 2 for $25 (or less) offering. So, choose wisely!

What a great week!

I need POTA:SE, which I will pick up in the 2 for $30 from Best Buy (the other disc being either X2 or Alien). I also need Gilligan, Lost In Translation, American Splendor, and the Rain Man SE. But I need some Reward Zone certificates in order for this to happen. And a Dick Van Dyke Show rebate check.

Thanks once again, Mike. I love waking up to find the Round Up waiting for me!

Question: Does anyone know which edition of "The Sound of Music" would be included in this Best Buy 2 for $30 deal? Isn't the newest and best version in white packaging?

Hey, Mike,

Thanks for all your great work during the Lambert vacation.

I'm almost embarrassed to point this out, but the title of the show arriving on DVD this week is just "Doc", not "The Doc"... It's a day job thing, sorry.

I remember the USA Today article a few months ago that said shoppers could get new DVDs for about $15. That sure has changed. I also notice that the box sets that come out are also more expensive the first week. I was all over Buffy's and Angel's seasons, but haven't rushed out to buy the latest of either becaus it just wasn't as cost effective. I keep looking more and more toward Ebay for the costs.

I guess the days of "loss-leaders" is over. When's the next DDD sale? :D

This is certainly a big week for me, with 10 dvds I want, although I won't be able to buy them all this week, and not all of them are listed in the roundup.

Thanks everybody for the kind words! :b

Derek: Have changed the title in the grid to "Doc". Thanks for the heads up. I hope my error didn't give you an achy-breaky heart or anything... (As I checked it out, I realized Doc was a program involving Billy Ray Cyrus. Excuse the very, very bad joke.)

I'm thinking about the 2/$30 deal for Alien & Aliens myself. I would even consider POTA, but don's see anything to match it up with.

Here's a question if anyone wants to take it up...

As I was researching the Warners Screen selection titles, I found that in Australia, Warners released them as a package of seven titles. The seventh was "Death in Venice". Any ideas as why that title was dropped from the U.S. promotion?

Unless I can get a good price on this ebay auction for Mother 1 + 2 (Earthbound here), I will buy Planet of the Apes and either Alice in Wonderland or see if the "two for one" deal is for the new edition of Alien (didn't want the nine disc box). Speaking of which, is the Alien and Aliens disc the new release or the old 1999 release?

Big week:

Lost in Translation
Secondhand Lions
Planet of the Apes

I'll also pick up Under the Tuscan Sun for my wife and I to watch on Valentine's day.

Probably pick up Rain Man later and American Splendor when it drops in price.
