My Samsung T151 STB has selectable switch for the source (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i). Given that different HD stations broadcasts in either 720p or 1080i, what am I supposed to do. Having to switch to 720p or 1080i depending on which station I'm watching seems silly. Also, since DVD is 480p, am I supposed to switch to that when watching a DVD movie? My TV is a 1024 x 768 plasma, if that matters.

Thanks!

I use 1080i only....

Always seems best, as my set can't even take 720p...

All channels no matter what they transmit will be upconverted to 1080i...

It looks amazing... And no you don't switch it at all, in normal operation.

If your set is more natively 720p, this may look a tad better I suppose, most people set it at 1080i and forget it.

It depends on the quality of the 1080i to 720p or 720p to 1080i conversion in the set top box and/or in the TV.

Try it both ways and compare the picture quality. You probably won't want to have a 720p show output as 1080i since the TV has to convert it back to 768p which is approximately 720p again.

I can't but perhaps someone with your make and model of plasma can tell you how it converts incoming 1080i and 720p to 768p. Also how the set top box converts 720p broadcasts to 1080i and vice versa. A few conversions make you end up with just 540 lines of resolution vertically.

I leave mine on 720p, it's closer to the actual resolution of my projector, and it looks outstanding. I'm not a fan of interlacing, even in HD.

I've found its fine at 1080i output. The Samsung does an excellent 720p->1080i conversion since I'd say the quality of ABC HD (720p) looks as good or better than the 1080i HD channels to me on a 1080i display.
