Once again here's the formula

weighted rank (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

R = mean average = Rating
v = number of votes for the movie = votes
m = minimum votes required (14 = 54% of the votes)
C = the mean vote for all the films (7.04)

1,214 films polled of which 676 films met the minimum required votes (14).

Thanks for your hard work Jim.

It's an interesting (and not too surprising) list. Naturally I'm disappointed by the placement of The Apartment (and of course baffled by any vote less than 10 for it :)), but at least there are only 6 films above it that I would classify as not truly great, and those are still good films.

Jim,

I hope you can post the mean rankings by themselves. Frankly, I'm a bit baffled as to how to interpret your formula. It appears that if everyone voted for a given film and gave it a 10, that the weighted rank would be 8.964, so I'm not really sure what that means. Could you explain the WR index in laymen's terms? Thanks.

Yep, voter stats are pretty much what I expected, especially with John W and George being among the most extreme voters and the most anti-foreign.

I was going to do some stats on which voters were closest/furthest from my own tastes, but it was starting to look like way too much work.

Keep this stuff coming, Jim! And thanks for all your work on it!

Jim, I thought you'd seen this?

Anyway, a good, if unsurprising list. Kudos for all the hard work.

Wow, I'm a generous voter? :) FWIW, I rate films according to that maxim Roger Ebert's always quoting: "It's not what it's about, it's how it's about it."

I have to say this surprised me a little. There are only a handful of Comedies (funny or not) that I'd consider to be great films. I do view the majority of Comedies (especially over the last 20 years) as empty calories.

Looks like I've uncovered a little bias on my part.

So I did. Duh, must have been a brain fart. I would have given it an 8, not that it would have mattered.

The two biggest surprises for me this poll were

1) Justin has seen so many non-horror movies, and furthermore actually doesn't necessarily hate films without any pain and suffering in them

2) George not getting a "comedy lovers award". How'd that happen?

I'm a bit confused about the comedy list. The Apartment finished overall higher than most of the comedies that made the comedy list, but it's not in the top 20 comedies?

This was fun, thanks for running it to the end, Jim.

Interesting stats, I had a feeling I might have been one of the more generous voters. I really thought Pulp Fiction would have cracked the Top 100.

Well, I've seen 51% of the "Top 100", and that ain't bad. ;)

Actually, I think it's more indicative of the fact that I avoid many of the so-called "classics", and can't afford to buy too many Criterion titles. Or maybe it's because I'm from England, and my country has a different bias on what makes a "classic" (I was amazed at how many of you abstained on my nominations). Oh yes, and I abstained on quite a few titles I'd not seen for a while. But very young?!! How dare you! Waahhhhhhhhh![/Baby Hermann]

Oh, I've seen 4 of the "Top 20" comedies. Which I find most amusing.*cough*crazy-American-sense-of-humour*cough*

As for the other categories, I seem to be distinctly average... Not sure how I should interpret that. :)

I've seen 81 of the top 100. There's several more that I'll be viewing in the next month or two.

It's too late to vote, but FWIW I'd give Robin Hood a 7.

No offense meant Phillip. I should have considered that you're from across the pond & the different assortment of films available. BTW I consider anyone under 30 to be very young. :D

Films that are multi-genre such as Comedy/Drama have been segregated into one or the other category.

Since I didn't laugh once when watching The Apartment :p) , I dumped it into the Drama category.

Sorry for any confusion this caused. :)

Not too surprised at some of the rankings. Particularly my overall level of generosity. :) By their inclusion, most of the films in this poll had something that someone found worthwhile, and it is only rarely that I can't find some aspect of a film enjoyable. Even films that are uniformly slammed can have some redeeming aspects ( production design, score, etc. ) in my mind.

Thanks for all the work on this Jim.
