Convince me to watch Family Guy Vol 1 & 2 (1 Viewer)

Hi, the title tells it all. Family Guy Vol 1 & 2 sit here on my desk and I'm pondering if I should watch them or sell/give them away. So I'd like to have some good points and reasons of why should I spend my time with this series. I've seen some short clips from the show and they didn't convince me... What is so good about Family Guy.

I enjoy shows like Futurama (best humor & comedy from US!), Twin Peaks, X-Files, TNG, DS9, Babylon 5, Buffy, Angel, Fawlty Towers, Seinfeld...

I don't like The Simpsons (boring...), Friends, Sex and the City, almost every other boring US sitcom... etc.

I'd like to take this opportunity to urge you to *NOT* watch "Family Guy". It was a poorly animated, derivative, unfunny piece of worthless garbage.

I rented Season One on the advice from a friend at work...it has been a LONG time since I have laughed out loud so many times during a 30 minute show! The humor is more South Park than Simpsons. Not always politically correct, and SCATHING attacks on many aspects of pop culture. A BIG THUMBS UP!!!!

It's a great show, but sell it if you aren't gonna watch it.

hmmm... you like Futurama but NOT the Simpsons? Those two shows kind of go hand in hand. Methinks you may not have seen much of the Simpsons.

Family Guy is great. Don't know if you'd get all the pop culture references that are all over each episode. I think only people in their 30's who grew up watching US TV would really get most of them (I am one of them).

The father (Peter Griffin) is mainly a cross between Homer Simpson and Eric Cartman.

I didn't like the show when it was on TV, but loved it once I saw it on DVD. I thought there were too many pop culture references in it, so I only saw about 2 episodes on TV. Then I got the DVDs on a recommendation from a friend and "got" it. A+ show.

There's a quote on the back of the first volume on DVD that says something like "it's like they put Homer Simpson, Eric Cartman and Hank Hill into a blender", which I totally agree with. I like pizza, ice cream and Yoo-Hoo, but if you put them in a blender the end product will taste horrible. Somehow I find it completely appropriate to use a machine that wrecklessly destroys the composition of food and mixes it together into an unrecognizable mess as a perfect metaphor for Seth MacFarlane's ability to write comedy.

I think they are totally different and really can't be compared to each other. Simpsons is more a social commentary and Futurama is basically a Sci-Fi parody. I can see how people like one or the other, I have friends who love the Simpsons but loathe Futurama. Personally, I think they are both brillant.

I bought Family Guy after recommendations around here, it took me a couple of episodes to know the characters and catch onto its wavelength but I find it downright hilarious. There are some truly bizarre moments scattered and some jokes fall flat, but the show is consistently funny. If you decide to watch it and don't take to it, watch 4 or 5 episodes before giving up on it.

Thank you for suggestions guys, and for the link TonyD, I think I'll give it a shot.

I bought the sets for a christmas present but they didn't arrive until now because of some delivery difficulties.

Actually I've seen Simpsons upto season 4. I liked it when I was younger but I got bored with it and now I don't see anything special about it. Sorry. But with Futurama it's different even though it's from the same Matt Groening. The concept, humor, dialog, characters and stories are so out, imaginative and (if you will) unamerican that it's impossible for a scifi lover like me to not love it.

Two words: Its funny.

I cant believe this show was cancelled, it was one of the best things on TV.

I couldnt agree with more on this one. Thats why I like certian animated shows (Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy etc), it can do cetrain things normal shows cant. Like what was mentioned before, there is lots of pop culture references. I have to admit I'm biased, South Park is one my favorite shows of all time.

Simply stated, FAMILY GUY is a magnificent series. Brilliant, inspired, multi-faceted satire. The DVDs are to be treasured!

It's honestly just depending on what you think is funny. I personally find it very funny, and have met very few people who didn't like it.

Pop in the first 2-3 episodes. If you don't like it, send it off on Ebay, or give it to someone as a gift or something.

Great show! It was cancelled way to soon! Imdb has a listing for the Family Guy straight to DVD movie now so let's hope FOX gets that cranked out and hopefully the rumours of the show returning come true!

I like scathing, irreverent humor, and I get all the pop culture references, but this echoes my opinion exactly:

Simply not a funny show at all. I think I went rather in-depth about it in another thread somewhere.

Better to try and find the shows it's ripping off, like Pinky and the Brain (Stewie is basically a far inferior version of the large-headed megalomaniacal mouse). I find FG basically badly written and very badly animated -- unlike The Simpsons, the characters never truly "act" with their faces or movements -- the sort of thing that depends on pop-culture jokes as a substitute for humor. IMO of course.
