Can the PS2's DVD player play DVD-R discs? I'm asking because I'm interested in buying a movie that doesn't have official distribution yet (First of May) but has been put on a DVD-R disc by the director/producer for the people who are interested in buying it.

Thanks.

It depends upon the revision of the hardware. The latest revision includes DVD-r/+r support as well as progressive scan. You might want to check out this thread for details.

I bought one when they first came out, and it played them fine.

Mine can read DVD-R and DVD+R, but it definitely can't read DVD+RW which is what I use most of the time. The newer ones say on the box they can play everything though- the laser in the older ones can't read the re-writable discs so a firmware upgrade won't do any good.
