I was in the local Virgin Megastore (Columbus, Ohio) yesterday. It took a while to find the high-rez discs (boths SACD and DVDA were shelved in the back of the DVD video section (not even with concerts). Of course there weren't many titles (couldn't have been more than 30) but what surprised me was this omission:

Not a single jazz, classical or AKUS disc on high-rez.

I'll skip the necessary rant about their prices ($5-7 more than ElusiveDisc).

If this is the kind of store SoundScan uses, their data is suspect.

When the SF "megastore" opened it was said to be the world's largest. After going down their a few times I found very little special in the store and most things overpriced. They claim to have over 10,000 titles but when a indy store opened they had over 100,000 titles.
I have not been back... a variation of what our idiot guv use to say in the movies

After searching the Virgin store in midtown manhattan, I found SACD & DVD-A discs in a nearly bare kiosk in the corner on the lowest level. Very limited supply compared to J&R Music World & Tower Records! Guess where i'm NOT going back to in the future!

I was just there a few weeks ago; when I asked were the hi-rez stuff was located, I was greeted by as stare as if I just asked where the hardcore porn was. Did you notice there was also Mini-Discs mixed in with the selections?

Their vinyl selection was much more prominent...

Ive been to the SF store a few times.
The size of the place is impressive.
The quality of stock beyond what your normal Mall store, ie: WAREHOUSE carries was not.

And the erzatz "English DJ" announcer got to be OLD, fast.

also, they were pretty slow on the uptake to start mail order sales.

And to think it all started from some country-hippys odd little at-the-time "avant-garde" album known as TUBULAR BELLS

Hey you SF guys, I keep seeing people mention a place there called Amoeba Music. What's it like?

The SF store was a bowling alley, when I refered to 100,000 titles I was talking about amoeba. They have 1000s of original posters from the Fillmore, Winterland and the other ballrooms.
DVD & LD wise they won't have 1000s of The Hulk for sale, but the last time I was there they had 5 R2 versions of Salo for sale under $40! The used bins hold 1000s and thats just for lds & dvds

The Largest Selection of Used CDs IN THE US
They have more cds in the $1 bins than most stores have cds

agree about amoeba - I've been in SF, Berkeley and LA...they are all great. Even better, in Berkeley there is an Amoeba and a Rasputin right by each other. Heaven

God, I remember the days of LP/CD shopping in Berkeley-I would take the whole day to browse all the different stores.
Rather ripped, Leopolds, Record Co-op, Tower, Aomeba, Mod Lang, and a couple others that I cant remember, both today and yesterday...
+all the book stores......heaven.

Amoeba and a Rasputin
I keep running back and forth looking for the best prices, can take a whole day.
Rasputin has a funky SF store downtown next to Blondies Pizza (Sound of Homer licking lips)
It's like 7 floors ....they are small floors and the elevator is downright frightening.
The only thing bad about Ameoba on Haight street they killed all the small stores

cool. this thread has evolved into a bay area / amoeba love-in. there's a north beach pizza that's a couple blocks away from amoeba, but they're only open at night. so, so good after a couple hours of cd browsing / shopping.
