Dolby Digital but no input for Xbox , pls help (1 Viewer)

I am a newby when it comes to home theatre systems so please bear with me.

I have a panasonic sa ht75 home cinema system and it works fine, all my DVDs play DTS/Dolby Digital no problem.

I have an Xbox and really want to connect it so I can get Dolby Digital on my games. The problem is, the home cinema system doesn't have an optical or coaxial input on it, which staggers me. I have connected the Xbox using standard connectors to the aux port. I get sound but its only in stereo rather than dolby. Sure I can use super surround, but its not the same as dolby digital.

Sorry if I sound thick, but is there any way I can get dolby digital for my xbox on my Panasonic SA HT75?? At the moment it looks like I will have to by another home cinema system. Its really annoying because my friends who have got other cheaper systems have an optical input where as my expensive system doesn't. If this is the case, Panasonic sucks big time.

Did you change your sound settings on the xbox? I take it you have the optical connected already, right?

Yes, I have gone into the sound settings on the Xbox and its set to Dolby Digital, but the problem is, there is NO optical connection on the Home Cinema system, there is NO coaxial connection either, that's the problem. There is just the standard connectors to the auxillary port on the back of the Home Cinema system.

I have plugged the connectors that came with the xbox into the back of the aux port on the cinema system and the only sound I get is stereo.

Without a digital connector, there is no way to get DD sound from your XBox. Sorry. The all-in-one easy-to-use systems often cut corners, and it looks like Panasonic designed this for people who won't be interested in connecting additional digital components.

The moral of the story here is don't by Panasonic all in one home theatre systems...


Rats, now I have to go and trade my system in for a decent one. Another £200 down the drain!

Sounds good, have you got any suggestions? Ideally I would like a panasonic, mainly because I have a panasonic 32" widescreen 100hz TV.

I suppose it doesn't have to be panasonic though. Also I am based in the UK so am not sure if the models are different over here as in America.

I've not got a mega budget as well. I could probably get £180 for my system on Ebay and will only have another £200 to put to it...

Yes, UK models are different, and I'm not qualified to advise, since the last receiver I bought was maybe 15 years ago. But we have a whole section on Receivers that's worth browsing.

P.S. You do realize, don't you, that moving to a receiver also means buying speakers, wires and a standalone DVD player?

Oh yes, I know that, its very handy if you want to change your dvd player to say a dvd recordable, you can keep your amp etc and just replace the dvd.. much better for future expansion, I only wish I'd looked into it more when I bought my cruddy Panasonic.

I'll have a read of all the top information sites before making my choice this time.

There are some HTiBs that do indeed have digital inputs for separate components. My brother's Sony HTiB has both a coaxial and optical digital inputs; so does my Dad's Onkyo. My brother's system has an integral DVD changer, my Dad's does not, just the amp and 5.1 speakers. Obviously, the cheaper HTiBs skimp on this feature. That is the reason that some all-in-one systems sometimes cost as little as $130.00.
