The Ultimate ASIAN Film Tournament

I have a feeling I’m going to regret this
:frowning: :D

I’ve started us off with 100 films, so we need 28 more films for a complete field.

Rules:

Asian films ONLY (Japan, Hong Kong, India, etc.)

Theatrical films ONLY

Obscure films that get no votes will be thrown out & replaced with one of the Wild-card films that I’ll hold in reserve.

If you have to abstain, please name the film that you haven’t seen.

Everyone gets 5 nominations, seconds & thirds

MASTER LIST

Akira
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hana-bi
Happy Together
The Hole
Spirited Away
Throne of Blood
Tokyo Story
Yi Yi

Round 3 winners

Ikiru

Stray Dog
Yojimbo

It seems that rather than have 19 Kurosawa movies, you could remove some of the lesser ones (Dodes-kaden, Dreams) and open up slots for more, shall we say, adventurous choices.

Nominate:
The Scent of Green Papaya
The Vertical Ray of the Sun
Drunken Master 2
What Time Is It There?
The River

First question—where do you put the Middle East? If Iran is in Asia, there will be several additional noms.

Re: The River - I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific though I'd assume it must either be found in the new releases section at any local Blockbusters or an alternate title to a Jackie Chan flic.

Simon,

Audition is already in as Ôdishon. Feel free to nominate more Miike though as I'll second them. :)

Angelo,

Castle in the Sky is already in as Laputa. Also those films you've seconded are already in. You still have your seconds to use.

Re: Dersu Uzala - Calling this an Asian film is a matter of debate. It was filmed on location in Siberia (Asia) by an Asian Director but this really is a Russian film. A large portion of Russia is in Asia but their film industry is located in Europe. I'll leave it in & if it gets in then fine.

I just don't want this to open the door to other Russian films. We'll save those for the 3rd part of my World Cinema Trilogy (European Foreign Language Tournament) :D

Though Martin may have a problem if a 20th! Kurosawa film enters the field. We wouldn't want to upset him now would we?

Gee, sorry if I don't want to see Kurosawa dominate the tournament. It's more interesting to me with a wider variety. It was just a suggestion.

What happened to my Drunken Master 2 nomination? If it doesn't qualify for some reason, then I nominate Lagaan.

Not too crazy about any of these, but I'll throw in my support anyway:

Second:
A Taste of Cherry
The Way Home

Third:
Yi Yi

I've bumped The Hole up to the top of my Netflix queue.

I get Jackie Chan flics all mixed up some times. I mistakenly listed it on my original list as Legend of the Drunken Master a.k.a. Drunken Master II which turns out to be the 94 film & is not the film I intended.

What I wanted to include was Drunken Master 2 (1979) and I've corrected it on the list so consider it already in.

Steve nice pick with Gate of Hell & I'll second it :emoji_thumbsup:

Great film & it's on TCM at the end of the month.
