Please give your title or thought on the most depressing film of all time -- be it straight drama, love story, epic, period piece, etc.
Any country, any year.

Probably some italian neo-realist movie, a lot of them were quite depressing, like Bicycle Thief, Germany Year Zero, etc.

Salò—an indictment of power and corruption without any sense that it won’t happen or can be prevented.
Vertigo—obsession with the dead to the detriment of the living.
The Piano—the use and exploitation of others.
Taxi Driver—down and out in NYC
I Live in Fear—it makes me wonder how many felt this way in post-war Japan

I too find much of the Italian neo-realists to be depressing.

There are lots of others, this is just a sampling.

Hmmm, the most depressing movie I've ever seen?

Voyager (1991) - Starring Sam Shepard and Julie Delphy, directed by Volker Schlondorff, based on the novel Homo Faber by Max Frisch.

Honorable mention: Louis Malle's Au Revoir Les Enfants.

Oh yes... I was very depressed after Hearts & Minds.

And yeah, Last Exit to Brooklyn isn't too cheery, either.
