I'm looking to replace my old DVD and CD players with a new Mega CD/DVD player. I notice that SONY has the DVPCX985V and the DVPCX875P. The 875 is a 301+1 and the 985 is a 400 disc changer but is also $100 cheaper? Anyone know the reason?

Also can anyone tell me if I can shuffle multiple CD's? For instance play cd 4, 72, and 265 and shuffle all the songs between them. If it can do this my wife says I can buy it! Posted Image

Lately I've done a lot of reading about these two mega-changers, here and at AVSforums. The 875 is last year's model. It has a few features that were dropped for the new one (985) such as the flip ability, easy play slot, and slink-e control (whatever that is). The new one has SACD capability and larger capacity. The 875 is also quite a bit smaller (16-7/8"W x 6-1/8"H x 16-5/16"D) than the 985 (16-7/8"W x 7-1/2"H x 21-1/16"D) if that is a factor.

Although MSRP on the 985 is less than MSRP for the 875, you can find the 875 on closeout right now for a very reasonable price. I decided to order one and found it at goodguys.com for $299 shipped free, no tax. I just checked and they still have them in stock.

As for the shuffle functions - I'm not certain since I haven't received mine yet (should be here today). My understanding is that you can group discs in folders, then shuffle play within a folder, or program up to 99 individual tracks and shuffle play those. The best info regarding these units is available at crutchfield.com.

The consensus on these players seems to be that there are some annoying issues (the interface is slow, and the autoplay feature is a hassle), but the video and audio quality is quite good, and the convenience more than outweighs the problems for most. I'm really looking forward to getting mine set up and getting all the dvd's and cd's out of the living room.

As far as dealing with your wife - remember that it's always easier to beg forgiveness than to get permission. Posted Image

Wow... great post and thanks for the goodguys referral. Let me know how the setup goes. For the extra $60 I might decide to go with the 985 and get the extra 100 disc capacity. Anyone have any reviews of the 985?

Thanks again!

Do a search in the dvdplayers section of avsforum.com for dvp-cx985v and you will find a thread with a lot of good info, both pros and cons. The search will also pull up a huge thread with more info than you or I would ever want or need about the 875. That thread also has some info about the 985 at the end.

I would post links to the threads, but I don't have enough posts here yet to do that.

I just got the 555es carousel and it has autoplay in its options menu. I wonder if the same ability is in the 777?

Also can anyone tell me if I can shuffle multiple CD's? For instance play cd 4, 72, and 265 and shuffle all the songs between them.

I checked at Goodguys and they have an "Ask the Expert" feature so I asked them about my shuffle question and this is the respone: "Sorry, but you will need to contact Sony directly for specifics on the shuffle/random feature as they do not publish any specifications on this feature."

HELP!

My 875 arrived yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to hook it up yet.

I looked at the info in the manual regarding the shuffle mode, and it only explained how you can shuffle b/w discs or tracks, not how to designate which disc or discs it should pull tracks from.

I'll try to get it hooked up this evening, and post my results, along with a short review, tomorrow. In the meantime, maybe if we keep bumping this thread up, a current owner of one of these will chime in.

I have the Song DVP-CX860, the design on this model is simular to the 870 & 875 changers. If you select "CD" on the remote, then select "SHUFFLE" (4 way select-Disc/Title/Chapter/Off)you should be able to get the shuffle mode you want. I am about to purchase the the DVP-CX985V an expect it to function the same way. Too bad they didn't add the "DELETE" key function that is on their cd only mega changers!

I have had the 875 for a year and it has played everything I have stuck in it without a hitch. The Progressive scan is perfect and outputs for everthing in the back. Quality unit!Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image
Wish I had a 985, but for $300 the 875 is a steal. Grab one while you can.

For those interested, I was able to pick up the 985 for $345 w/ free shipping at OneCall taking advantage of a deal found in the Deals section. It was 10% off automatically, then I got another $10 off, and finally signed up for a OnePass account (free) and got 1% off.

anyone know if you can hook up a 860 with a 985 and use the 2 together in the DVD mode?
I maxed out my 860 and a 985 would be maxed out too!
