Thanks for the review -- sounds good, if not quite as packed as the first set.

Are there any other "crew" commentaries on the other discs besides the in-character commentaries? (The "Rifle" commentary wasn't in the press release, so I'm wondering if there are others.)

The show really hit its stride second season and there are many classic episodes to be had here. Texas City Twister and Leane's Saga are soem of my favorites. It's probably not a coincidence these are both Luane-heavy episodes.

This was a great season, hardly a dud in it (and the characters all attained more or less their definitive character designs in this season). who can forget the episode where Hank becomes so obsessed with proving that he didn't rent a pornographic tape that he becomes an expert on pornography just so he can demonstrate that the film he supposedly rented hadn't even been released yet? Or the wrestling episode:

HANK: When did this become a crusade to ruin wrestling?
PEGGY: Oh, that is nonsense. Did a woman ruin the Supreme Court?
HANK: A woman did ruin the Supreme Court, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

One thing I noticed in this review, it looks like the episodes will be in airdate order instead of production order like the first season, which I prefer. I'll be picking this one for definitely. Although I am a little disappointed that Mike Judge isn't in any of the commentaries again.

Nice review but I think you were a little harsh on the animation style. Speaking on the coloring, the show is colored using water color paints (per Mike Judge interview on fresh air). I think this gives it a unique and appealing look but I guess it's not for everybody.

my kids and i have damn near worn out season one, i tell you what. we can't wait for season two!

I was going to get this anyway, and a friend said that it would be my Christmas present, although I'm getting it much before Christmas, but I have a question.

Adam, a very thorough review indeed, keep up the good work, but my question is do the menus have recorded dialog on them? On the first season dvd, when the menu came up you got a greeting from either Hank, Bobby, or Dale and I'm wondering if there are more of those sorts of things on S. 2. Thanks

Jeff, those are the dates given to me on Fox's press release about the set.

Casey, yes, the menu's do have recorded dialog. I guess I should have included that in my review. Actually, some are quite funny, and they change disk to disk. For instance, Dale on one menu will say "Please make a selection", and then he says rude things the longer you stay on the menu. Then on disk 4, Bill is wearing a shirt that says Disk 3, then he says, "Oh damn!", and then pulls of his top shirt to reveal the Disk 4 shirt underneath.

Upcomingdiscs.com has a review that also seems to be based on only the first and fourth discs (wonder why Fox only sent out those two discs to advance reviewers? or are the middle discs still in production?), which adds a little detail about what the feature on the fourth disc is:

"Music Inspired by the Hills" contains a few music videos like the "Manger Babies" by Luanne and "The Turtle Song" by Peggy. A couple of songs from the series are included with audio only -- my favorite was "Halloween Flashback" which is an homage to the Peanuts piano accompaniments.

I was kind of hoping they'd have some of the tracks from the King of the Hill CD (like Luanne singing the theme from Billy Jack), but that's OK.

Has anyone found the "Monsignor Martinez" easter egg that's supposed to be on the first disc?

Thanks, Adam. BTW, did you know that Brittany Murphy was also the voice of Bobby's friend (and Dale's "son") Joseph Gribble? (Since the show put Joseph through puberty a few years ago, the character has been voiced by Breckin Meyer, also from Clueless.)

Oh, and Mike Judge is also Monsignor Martinez. Vaya con Dios!

I just got the new set (which precludes my eating actual food for a week, of course); I haven't really watched the episodes yet, but going through some of the special features: I like the "Arlen School of Drawing" on disc 2 where a KotH animator named Glenn Dion talks us through the process of drawing five of the characters (Hank, Peggy, Bobby, Luanne and Cotton).

Some of the animated "director's intros" are pretty fun, kind of like an indie/underground version of KotH (there's one where Connie beats the crap out of Bobby, and at least two with exploding heads).

The menus this time are just built out of old animation from the show, but when you click on the episode titles you hear a character announcing the title, and the languages and special-features sections have newly-recorded messages from Peggy, Bobby, Luanne, Dale, etc. (there's no trace of Mike Judge in any of the special features, alas).

The commentary on "How to Fire a Rifle..." is interesting enough to make me wish there were more than one "real" commentary on this set, but that's my only cavil so far. Haven't yet had a chance to go through the 197(!) deleted/extended scenes. Nor have I found the easter eggs that were supposed to be on discs 1 and 4, but then I'm lousy at finding easter eggs.

There's also a card in the box that says that season 3 will be coming in spring 2004, "subject to change" (presumably meaning "unless sales really suck").

Jaime, I'm waiting for my set to be dropped off, very much looking forward to it, the info you gave excited me even more.
