how much space does my receiver need to "breath"? (1 Viewer)

i've got my receiver in an entertainment center. there are vents in the top of the receiver, and a shelf above it. i can alter the height and position of the shelf...but the closer it is to the receiver, the better the system looks

so far above the receiver can i place the shelf without worrying about the receiver getting too hot? is an inch of space enough? 2 inches? just a small crack? i know heat rises...i'm just wondering if it'll be able to circulate within a smaller space

IMHO I think 6 inches would be fine. Since it's in a entertainment center it's probably not able to vent very good on the sides so 6 inches on the top would be good. I have about 8 inches of clearence for mine in my entertainment center. You can do a search on this and not to long ago someone else asked and got quite a few responses you can get a idea from. I plan to install a fan for mine one day to assist in the cooling.

I think it would also depend somewhat on what the receiver was. If it was a smaller, 75 watt x 5 channel or HTIB one, it would not require a great deal of space to breath (although room never hurt anyone). If it were a larger, flagship receiver which put out 100 or more watts to 5 or more channels, I would think 6-8 inches would be a safe bet. I'm sure it makes some mention about space in your manual. The manual for my pioneer 45tx recommends 8 inches.

Onkyo also recommend 8" clearance on the top. It never hurts to leave more breathing room then needed.

My Denon2803 calls for four inches on all sides for venting. Since my avr also sits in an entertainment center there is only aprox. two inches on each side and in the back for venting. I set the shelf above the avr at four inches and then stacked the dvd and vcr player on the shelf. To add venting in the back I drilled 6 1.5inch holes in the back of the entertainment center, directly behind the avr so they can't be seen. This (I hope) will add venting and makes a conveient area to route speaker wire, sub cables and such.

i would say somewhere around 5 inches will probably work.

since it sounds like you can adjust the spacing, what i would do is simply experiment. adjust the shelf, then feel how hot the receiver is getting. see if you notice any height-to-heat correlation.
