A question about this surround sound system (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone, I think I know a fair amount when it comes to home theaters but I need some assistance every now and then. I'm thinking of picking up a "home theater in a box" type system for a decent price, so I found this: http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.js...rk_3&oid=72587

For all of you advanced HT people, what are your opinions on this setup? Should I go for it? Let me just tell you a little about where it is going too. The room is my bedroom (the basement), it has carpeted floors, and I mostly watch movies by myself. Hope my info helps. So should I go for the system?

I prefer to avoid all-in-one systems like this.

You can get by with something like the Kenwood HTB units, something like the HTB-509 (or it's current replacement) for about $600. At least with these systems, the speakers, receiver, sub, DVD player are all separate units so you can swap the pieces out as pieces break.

If you "...know a fair amount...", make sure to check the connections on any HTB. If they have funny connectors or settings to make you think that this amp only works with the included speakers and custom/funny connectors - find something else.

You didnt mention what your budget is and whether or not you already have a receiver since that system doesnt include one. If you can afford it you would be much better off with a system like this Onkyo one...

Damn! I knew I forgot to add some info! As far as my budget is concerned I am looking to spend no more than $400. I was also highly considering this following system, which one would you guys choose?

I am leaning towards the SONY now that I think about it. What I really want to know is what the more advanced HTF users would go for and how the products hold up. Oh yeah, I also already have a DVD player with a hefty DVD collection, so the Samsung player is pretty useless. I also don't own a receiver.

If you have to choose between the Samsung and the Sony I would pick the Sony. I would still choose the Onkyo over either of these because I think the speakers sound better.

If you're in no hurry, cruise the open box stuff at Circuit City. I see decent little receivers all the time at my CC for $200-$250. Although i'm not a fan of Sony speakers, you could pick up some of their new bookshelves and a center channel and cruise in under your budget (before a sub of course). Polk's also go on sale quite regularly there too. Either of these would perform much better than either of those ht's in a box you were considering.

Just two cents from a guy who suffers from upgraditis because I learned too late that if you are going to buy something, go all out, and you'll save money in the long run.

Thanks alot guys! I'm going to do a little shopping around, and I will consider all of your advice before I make any final purchases.

P.S. - Would it be a pain in the @ss to set up the HT if my room isn't a perfect square/rectangle? It's an oddly shaped room, but I think I'll manage. The room is like a rectangle with a square missing in the upper right hand corner if you could picture that. Thanks again.

In fact, it is actually recommended not to have a room is not a perfect quadrangle (square or rectangle) as this would prevent any interference due to standing waves which reduce your overall audio experience
