I like to watch movies really loudly, however I like in a basement suite. I was wondering if there is anyway of dampening the sound from going straight through the ceiling, without any construction. I live below my parents if need be I'm sure minor construction is ok, but the less the better. Thanks

If your goal is merely to block sound, not reflect, or diffuse it there are many sites selling acoustic materials that all agree on a sheet damping (sound deadening) material similar to the type used in cars to deaden sound.
Try www.acousticsfirst.com or www.partsexpress.com
This material can block some sound, is simple to install ( applies with a staple gun) and is not too expensive. You could also add acoustic insulation between the stud cavities and TGI's. This insulation is found in home improvement stores. After installing the acoustic insulation, apply the sheet damping material. Then turn up your system to test the difference. Good luck.
