You know, the ones that are
action, action, action... silence. line. 1 more second of action. "insert name of film".

And it's gotten to the point that they've used lines that don't really rate being used for that silence - line - ending structure. The biggest case in point for me is for X-Men. I still remember it. "We're not the same. Not all of us." Bam. Hello? That's kind of silly.

The Charlie's Angels 2 trailer was really refreshing; a new pattern. More interspersed, better flow.

It seems like this pattern is pretty prevalent now though. What was the first? Did one of the terminator's use "I'll be back" as the line? I'm interested to hear theories, gripes, etc.

Haha! I was just talking about this to someone last week. Almost your exact words :)

In any event...yes, I'm getting pretty tired of the common pattern. Off the top of my head, I really liked the Adaptation trailer, as well as the Confessions of a Dangerous Mind one...although, I can't really remember what structure they used.

I like pretty much any trailer that doesn't use mr. movie voice, or references to critics or awards, let the movie speak for itself

I really liked the beginning of the trailer for Stuck on You with its references to awards...

"4 time Academy Award watchers, the Farrelly Brothers" :D

I agree on the patterns, especially with action or suspense/horror movie trailers. They always have that very last 'jolt'. I'm usually expecting it now, and when it doesn't happen I'm surprised.

I liked the trailer for Leathal Weapon 4. They just showed the opening scene, cut down of course. It was great. Didn't spoil the movie, was just good fun.

You forgot a part. There's usually one more 1-second shot after the title that's supposed to give the audience a last jolt but usually just comes off as incomprehensible :)

Yeah, I'm really, really sick of formulaic trailers, from the editing down to the same music that gets recycled over and over again and the heavy-handed voice-overs. I honestly can't remember the last trailer I saw that I liked. If I see a movie now, it's almost always because I was already sold on the movie because of whatever advance info I got from sources besides the trailer.

Someone around here used to cite Sturgeon's law - 90% of everything is crap.

When it comes to these previews, 99% of them are CRAP :D

 How true! I posted about this same crap sometime ago. I entirely agree, it's gotten SO tiresome! Even the trailers say "by the numbers".

But you know what, I will take all that over the 70's music comedy trailers with tremendously UNfunny last lines.

Pearl Harbor trailer, best trailer I've ever seen. More trailers should follow this kind of pattern. No voiceovers (except if it's dialogue from the movie) and if you have to show scenes with dialogue, don't let the audience hear too many lines, so we don't get sick of those lines by the time we see the whole thing. This should be more of a guideline for dramas, this probably wouldn't work for (most) comedies.

I don't notice the editing so much, but it does seem that trailers are getting longer and longer. There were three trailers before the film I attended this weekend, and each seemed interminable. I swear they were 3-4 minutes each.

Whatever happened to the 30 or 60-second trailer?

My biggest issue with trailers is that they give away too much of the movie. If I want spoilers I'll come here and read about them, I don't want the entire plot given away in the trailer! If I know everything that's going to happen, why shell out $6 to see the movie?

Me too. After seeing Terminator 3 I said the same thing to my wife. Every trailer at that movie just annoyed me, and I don't even remember what any of them were for. I'm getting tired of the "Bang-- boom--action--silence(insert stupid joke here)--(startup loud music)--Bang--boom--action" type of trailers.

PH was a tremendous trailer. I think The Passion has a great trailer as well. I do agree there is a formula, but like big head DVD covers, marketing is triumphant over skill or taste or artistic interpretation.

A shame.

Take care,
Chuck

I try and avoid trailers for movies I'm looking forward to seeing, to avoid seeing something I might not want to be aware of going in, not necessarily a spoiler but something like, say, the Yoda-Dooku dual in "Clones."

I also hate hearing "The number 1 movie in America!" just because for that one week (usually after it's initial release) everyone went to see it because of the hype, or because there was nothing else out that week; or hearing it stars some Academy Award winner, as if that necessarily makes the movie THAT much better (as if Academy Award winners ALWAYS deliver top-notch performances).

Too bad it was the worst of the series!

The one they did for Lethal 2 was even better: Murtaugh on the toilet, followed by the toilet hitting the car & the narrator saying "They're back & this time they're not takin' any crap."

The latest thing also seems to be adding quick white flashes every time the scene changes. The trailer for the new Tomb Raider really annoyed me.

I think the funniest trailers I have seen are the American Pie and American Wedding trailers. Yes it gives away a good joke but no one else really does that.

Text is alright if its used correctly. i.e. Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers (both of their final trailers).
