I recently received a gift certificate good for about 5 DVDs. So, being an aspiring DVD collector and nascent film buff, I'm wondering what everyone's top 5 list is for must-own dvds?

Let the lists begin!

Well I don't know what nascent means:) , but I just looked at my modest DVD collection and determined these are the 5 I would keep if I could only keep 5:

Roger Waters In the Flesh -- awesome concert, just superb
Saving Private Ryan (DTS) -- great HT experience
The Matrix -- no explanation needed
Serendipity -- many corny moments, but geez, has Kate Beckinsale ever looked better? :D
My Cousin Vinny -- I still laugh at that darn movie, even though I've watched it many times.

Striking a balance between the importance of a film, entertainment value, transfer and supplements:

Dracula (1931)

Two versions of the film, a commentary, a documentary, and an optional Philip Glass score. This title is OOP, but well worth the effort if you go looking for it.

Citizen Kane

Great restoration with two commentaries, coupled with a great documentary.

The Third Man

Top-notch Criterion treatment! 'Nuff said! (my favorite film)

Three Colors Trilogy (box set)

I'm cheating here by picking three films, but they're a must-have for film buffs. Pretty good transfers and incisive supplements.

Immortal Beloved

The odd man out on my list, but IB is a very entertaining film depicting the posthumous search for Ludwig van Beethoven's titular lover. Very nice transfer and a darn good commentary. One of my favorite discs. :)

Ah yes, well, I didn't think this question had never been asked before, but, it's too much fun not to throw out there (albeit in the wrong forum, oops)! Thanks for indulging.

Great responses. So far I already have FOTR:EE, Rushmore Criterion, Amelie, Fight Club, and Serendipity (via my GF).

This is a very tough top 5 for me to determine. My evaluation is base on transfer, supplement, and my personal preference of which films.

1. In The Mood For Love: Criterion
2. Amelie
3. Three Colors Trilogy (box set) - I was just going to pick Blue, my favorite of the three, but since Steve cheated, so will I.
4. Singin' In The Rain
5. Rashomon: Criterion

Steve, I'm surprised Sullivan's Travels: Criterion is not in your top 5, great disc.

1. Buffy: THe Vampire Slayer Season 1
2. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Season 2
3. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Season 3
4. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Season 4
5. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Season 5 (coming soon!)

(I had to cheat a bit too) and actually I'd recommend a totally different top 5, but this had to be done. :D
