Hi guys,

we have just posted reviews of Scorsese's Gangs Of New York and the upcoming Superbit release of Edward Zwick's Legends Of The Fall.

I must say I totally enjoyed Gangs, more so than when I went to see it at the cinema. It's also nice to see us (in R2 and R4-land) getting the good end of the deal fro a change :).

I'm reviving this thread again to see if anybody knows if there is a difference between the UK edition and the Australian edition of Gangs of New York, meaning, were different authoring companies used? And how does the transfers compare? Would LOVE for dvdbeaver.com to compare all three editions (R1, R2 and R4).

I watched the r4 on the weekend and thought the transfer was great.... I didn't see a single compression artifact so it would be safe to assume it's probably using an identical encode to the r2. A friend of mine has compared the r4 and r1 editions and the r4 came out on top for picture quality due to the increased resolution.

this is interesting, because after watching both a preview disc for review and then the sell-thru version available here in R4, the r4 version still manages to screw up the transfer with some amazing image distortions (a few frames between scenes are interspersed with each other) to create such a jarring effect it pulls you right out of the film. To be honest, i thought about sending my copy back to see if i could get a refund.

has anybody heard what Columbia are going to do about this?

Has it happened on any other region disc?

Has anyone compared the R2 to the truly awful R1 release...? One of the WORST examples of Excessive EE ever applied. Nearly unwatchable on a large display.

I'm willing to take screengrabs from the R2 UK edition if someone is willing to take screengrabs from the R1 and R4 edition (doesn't have to be the same person :)). Just PM me and we can try to make it work. I have a server we could use to share them.
