LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Gregory Peck, the lanky, handsome movie star whose long career included such classics as ``Roman Holiday,'' ``Spellbound'' and his Academy Award-winner, ``To Kill a Mockingbird,'' has died, a spokesman said Thursday. He was 87.

Peck died overnight, Monroe Friedman told The Associated Press.

Another great is gone. R.I.P. Mr. Peck.

Three truths about movies, as noted by Roger Ebert:

* It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it.

* No good movie is too long, and no bad movie is short enough.

* No good movie is depressing, all bad movies are depressing.

A rarity...a true movie star and brilliant, understated actor. And just named AFI's #1 hero as Atticus Finch.

Thanks for all the great performances, including my favorite in MOBY DICK (quoted above).

My favorite. They don't make 'em like they used to...and never will again.

This one makes me very sad.

How ironic, today is Uta Hagen's birthday. She and Gregory Peck were in the superb 1978 movie The Boys From Brazil.

Thanks for the fine performances, Mr. Peck.

I've been meaning to throw on TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD for a long time now.... Looks like tonight's the night. I'll make it a double feature with Criterion's SPELLBOUND.

You'll be missed, good sir.
