This is for a friend who bought my old receiver, but his old Sub won't work with my receiver (it requires a signal through a ribbon cable from the old receiver it came with). So I wanted to find out from those in the know what would be a great budget Subwoofer for under $200.

Try to find an AR S112 on close-out somewhere. My son in law got one from Crutchfield for about that amount, and it sounds pretty darn good. Tom

The JBL PB-12 is supposed to be the best in that price range, just make sure to get an extended warranty because they have had a few problems.

Thanks for the replies. The JBL 12 inch costs more than $200. In fact the best price I've found on the JBL 10 inch is $189. The AR is way more expensive...you must have gotten a good deal on that one. I think I'll recommend the JBL PB10 to my friend at $189. It got good reviews and the price is right.

I got a Yamaha YST-SW305 for $183 plus shipping here:

Dual 8" cones, 200 watt-active servo amp, small footprint, controls on front panel, adjustable high cutofff 40-140 Hz, pretty massive at 50 lbs.

Sounds great for music (quick and clean) and goes fairly low and loud for HT in my average-size room.

A great deal for the $$.

I would have to go with the Sony SA-WM40 The king of sub 200 dollar subs... 12 inch driver, low entension (relatively), and a heck of a sub for the price once you do the poly-fill mod! Can be had for around 150. (dicontinued) Some Sears I have heard even had it on close out for 109!!!
